Just watched The Quiet Earth, New Zealands own post apocalyptic movie staring Bruno Lawrence and Pete Smith - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089869/

As far as post apocalyptic stuff goes it's not that great, however the brief shots of 80's New Zealand (mainly Auckland CBD) is awesome.

I fucking love the Quiet Earth. Bruno Lawrence was one of our finest. The whole wandering around in a nightie with shotgun thing will stay with me forever. I first saw that film as the late movie when 3 first started circa '89 or '90.

I AM CONDEMNED TO LIVE.

Yeah, the shotgun in the church, pointing it at the Jesus statue, "Get down here or the kid gets it!"

Also, his speech with the recorded crowd noise was awesome/sad.

Saw Oblivion a while ago too. While it's not completely terrible Moon does the same story so much better.

Friend of mine in Mexico went to the premier today, said it was amazing. Pretty confident it will be. Del Toro knows his shit.

Tartanperil wrote:Totally agree about Soylent Green. I hadn't actually even heard of it until a few years ago, when my buddy made me watch as a sci-fi classic. Pretty much rubbish imho.

Saw it for the first time recently and had the opposite experience. :baton: I was cautious with my expectations because it's not mentioned quite in the same breath as other classics (eg. Brazil which I'd also just seen for the first time). But thought it was great. A bit dated/stark, and obviously not funny like some of the others, but I'd count it among classics everyone should see foreshore.

I've watched a heap of the films mentioned in this thread now, so here's some quick-fire reviews.

Delicatessen: awesome, would recommend. A loony comedy in a time when cannibalism is starting to become accepted.
THX 1138: 1st half is great, but it felt as if the ending didn't resolve anything apart from the guy being able to DSW without anyone watching.
Battletruck: sick as.
1984: apparently it's quite close to the book (which I haven't read). A couple of things could've been explained better, but still good.
Zardoz: dystopia, more like titstopia.
Akira: weird but decent, though another one where things could've been explained a bit more.
Logan's Run: alright, though the robot bit is weird. Now I can appreciate the references Phil dropped on the forum.
Stalker: great, dig the mood of this one.
Rollerball: gnarly sport but weighed down a bit much by the film's metaphorical meaning.
No Escape (Escape From Absolom): ok, but the futuristic prison early on is at odds with the rest of the film. Bit Waterworldy.
The Bothersome Man: somewhat ambiguous, but mainly satire aimed at the IKEA age. A bit too deadpan for me. I'd say The Lobster ripped this off in a big way.

Also watched Sátántangó, which fits the thread. Over 7 hours long but ranked #24 overall on RYM because they love pretentious stuff. It depicts post-USSR Hungary as being almost as bleak as The Road. It's simultaneously intriguing and tedious, putting you in the characters' shoes by being a struggle to endure and understand. About the only highlight in their life is alcohol, particularly in a pub dance scene which the actors were actually drunk for...
and one of them spends 10 minutes trying to keep a cheese breadstick balanced on his forehead.

Harrison Bergeron, pretty good and scarily relevant. Just watched it since it's on youtube in full:

Not a movie, but a 1981 TV series that's aged really well

The Day Of The Triffids

Not quite so good, but still worth a look, the 2009 version:

'I Like It When You Die' is the fourth album by American grindcore band Anal Cunt. The album was originally titled You're Gay, and the album cover was going to contain a mirror, but this idea was later changed

Post Apocalyptic or just Sci-Fi. I don´t know. I watched the movie a few days ago and it was not too good.

Some good lines in here. "Keep the sun out of your eyes and be yourself" is a personal favourite.

I did the audiobook. Is particularly good. It leads you to believe it's some sort of geek 80s retro video game worship, which it is, but it starts twisting to quite dark dystopian shit as it progresses.

This is pretty fucked up also. Stars a young Don Johnson pre Miami Vice
