'ITS NOT ALL BLACK AND WHITE' Dairy Awareness Films/Forum

Postby Lentil » Mon Sep 27, 2010 9:36 pm

The Coalition Against the World Dairy Summit ( http://www.CAWDS.org.nz ) is holding an awareness night of educational film documentaries with a forum and guest speakers.

Wednesday - 6 Oct 2010 Time 7:00pm Location Te Karanga Gallery, 208 K Road, Auk.

We will be highlighting the animal rights abuses, environmental damage, health problems and global trade impacts that the dairy industry creates in New Zealand/Aotearoa and internationally.

CAWDS is a coalition of groups who have come together to organise action against the World Dairy Summit being held in Auckland in November 2010.

To get more involved in actively opposing the summit and raising awareness about the issues involved, visit our website.

Fonterra protest highlights destructive dairy industry ahead of World Dairy Summit

The Coalition Against The World Dairy Summit (CAWDS) believe that yesterday’s Greenpeace protest at the Fonterra head office in Auckland demonstrates the growing awareness of the dairy giant’s devastating practices, and are calling for more protests to come.

Claire Dann, spokesperson for the Coalition says, “Fonterra are coming under fire for their part in the palm kernel industry and rainforest deforestation, and rightfully so. However the whole dairy industry is also responsible for animal rights abuses, increasing climate change, jeopardising human health and putting profit first before human and animal livelihoods. This is why when the industry leaders come together for the World Dairy Summit in November we need to continue protesting and let them know that this intensive dairy model has no place in our futures.”

The coalition has formed to actively oppose the World Dairy Summit being hosted in Auckland from November 8 – 11 at Skycity. It also aims to raise public awareness regarding what is wrong with the dairy industry and counter the claims from those within it that it can be done sustainably.

“It is totally ridiculous that the World Dairy Summit will be holding talks on how to make the industry ‘clean and green’ when in reality it is all about getting more cows on more land, in order to produce more milk to export. The focus is on maximizing profit regardless of the impacts on the animals, the land and the consumers” says Ms Dann.

"Over quarter of NZ's extremely high greenhouse gas emissions comes from intensive fertilizer on dairy farms, and more than a quarter of our emissions are methane from the high dairy herd numbers.”

“The corporate style dairying that is represented at the summit is doing a great job of painting a nice happy picture of milk production, but the public need to know that behind this, there is immense animal suffering, contaminated waterways, increasing levels of climate changing gases and whole new markets being sold milk for its so called ‘health benefits’. We encourage people to find out more about where their milk comes from and join us at the protests against the summit” commented Ms Dann.

Pretty much all bobby calves get killed. There just isnt any use for them in the dairy industry.

Serious question... if NZ decides to cease diary farming what do you propose we should do with all our cows?

Yeah, that's what I pretty much thought. Inducing births a bunch of weeks earlier to increase milk producing does seem pretty horrible, but the reasons the interviewer gives (that the milk is worth more than the calves life) is fairly redundant as they do this anyway albeit at term - so should probably be against the dairy industry regardless of this practice. If they are actually outraged at the 'unnaturalness' of it all, well artificial insemination + other odd farm practices should be outlawed as well...

And honestly, of course the milk is more valuable than the cows life....if it wasn't then chances are they wouldn't be using the cows as factories, but instead letting them live a natural life.

Oh also, is there a good/legitimate reason why they need to wait until 2012 until the practice is outlawed? Seems like it's something they could easily stop straight away.

CONTACT: cawds10@gmail.com or phone/text 0226822347 if any questions.

On the 8-11th of November, the World Dairy Summit is being held in Auckland, New Zealand. The World Dairy Summit is an international conference organised by the International Dairy Federation, a non-profit private sector organization representing the interests of various stakeholders in dairying at the international level. The main platinum sponsor of this event is Fonterra.

The conference will bring together dairy experts from a...round the world to discuss topics such as government policies, farming, science, nutrition and health, marketing and the environment.

The Coalition Against the World Dairy Summit (CAWDS) is made up of animal rights, social justice and climate activists who are coming together to highlight the animal abuse, environmental destruction and social aspects of the global dairy industry.

Fonterra are the main corporate dairy power in New Zealand and one of the biggest exploiters of cows, ‘third world’ markets and the earth. We would like solidarity actions whether it is symbolic or direct actions and liberations against your local Fonterra targets or the dairy industry in general.

Start getting a group together, research a target and get in touch with the co-alition for more details!!

Planned demos:

Monday 8th Nov: 8am - 10.30am outside Skycity
Tuesday 9th Nov: 8am - 9am outside Skycity
Wednesday 10th Nov: 8am - 9am outside Skycity
Thursday 11th Nov: 8am - 9am outside Skycity

More actions will be released closed to the time so stay tuned.

I imagine it's just not to piss the farmers off too much / hope the public forget about it so they can do it the next year anyway / time to create some drug that turns the calf into jelly so when it's aborted early you don't see the evidence so much?

At least they didn't set abortion targets for the next couple of years until they're rid of it, I guess. Line charts of aborted cows probably wouldn't go down that well

I'm sure they could come up with a creative name that would put a positive spin on it
