I made a knife

Postby the croc » Wed Sep 21, 2016 10:09 pm

So ever since I worked on fishing boats and spent all day cutting fish I've been interested in knives and sharpening. I do a bit of knife and tool sharpening for people around where I live but six weeks ago I started a pattern welding course followed by a knife making course at The Learning Connexion in Lower Hutt. I can't recommend the course enough. Now I've just got to figure out how to make a living off this shit...

Image
Cut and ready for welding. Four old metal files and a band saw blade. 16 layers.

Image
End of first day forging.

Image
16 layer billet compacted to ~5mm

Image
Cleaned up on belt sander and ready to be cut for rewelding.

Image
Checking the welds on the 16 layer billet before more forge work this morning. Dark bands are band saw lighter bands are old metal files.

Image
64 layer billet ready for pattern work.

Image
Blue steel. Ground down after pattern work with a ball peen hammer.

Image
After acid etching.

Image
Knife shape planned out with high precision.

Image
After oil hardening.

Image
Old rewa rewa bed leg.

Image
Acid etched at the top and before etching at bottom. Rimu (I think) and rewa rewa handle. Almost done. The pendant in the top photo is the offcut from cutting in the tang (metal part that sits inside the handle).

Image
Handle shaped and double etching in citric acid.

Image
64 layers of pattern welded steel with a rewa rewa and rata handle. 15cm/6 inch blade 110gm.

That's really awesome dude. Couple mates in Melbourne dabble in blacksmithing and steel work, but that is far superior to what iv'e seen 'em produce. Mighta found your calling. I'm only familiar with timber work myself and that handle came up pretty choice

Thanks everyone!

I got heaps of native wood off a furniture maker when he was moving house a while ago. Unreal how much for granted really nice native wood was taken for not that long ago. Hence really nice bed legs etc. The house I'm renting at the moment is mostly carpeted but the whole place has matai floorboards. I'm tempted to replace whats under the carpet with chipboard and use the matai for knife handles haha.

This is the first knife I've made from scratch, but I've done a bit of knife and tool restoration before so I'm pretty comfortable with the sharpening side of things.

Nice work!
'I Like It When You Die' is the fourth album by American grindcore band Anal Cunt. The album was originally titled You're Gay, and the album cover was going to contain a mirror, but this idea was later changed
