Ok who has been to Japan?

Postby kettles » Wed Mar 26, 2014 8:06 pm

Tell me everything worth doing and the best things to experience.

I'm currently researching Tokyo so suggestions for Tokyo would be cool. Shrines and shit are cool and I'll do some of that steez but I think it would be a lot more fun to dig deeper than the typical "go here see sights go to next place repeat" which I admittedly did too much of in Europe. Keen to do karaoke, meet locals, go to gigs, etc.

Any suggestions for the rest of Japan would be cool too, we have three weeks to fill.

Best venues for punk and hardcore:

http://www.antiknock.net/

http://www1.odn.ne.jp/~cfs81480/index.html/menu.html

Bring earplugs to gigs because the crank it really fucking loud here and most venues have very big PA systems.

Like Devon said, go to Disk Union. The ones in Shinjuku and Ochanomizu are best.

The Toyoko Inn hotel chain has decent deals and it would be worthwhile signing up as a member to rack up points. I think you can get one free night for every five you stay.

Cheapest accomm is at Internet cafes. These have showers and coin lockers for your stuff.

Go to karaoke during the day for much cheaper deals and ask for the nomihodai (all-you-can-drink) option if you're a boozer. Karaoke here has Napalm Death, Slayer, Judas Priest, Ramones, Damned, etc...

For gigs a friend in Tokyo recommends this gig guide, particularly the venues Bushbash, Earthdom, Muryoku Muzenji & Soup:

I can also vouch for Disk Union in Shinjuku. Haven't been to the other one.
Stayed at Toyoko Inn, it was fine, I am tall so everything is tiny but they have have beer vending machine in the lobby and free internet and breakfast.
Make sure to visit the shop "Don Ki"
Go up lifts and open doors. We found a great touch screen restaurant just by taking a random lift.

Didn't someone make a thread real similar to this not long ago? Probably worth digging that up on Google for some extra goodies.

The impression I got was there's cool stuff just about EVERYWHERE in central Tokyo. It's just everything is so closely packed in together you have to do a bit of exploring to find things like a good karaoke place, a nice little bar, good little food places etc. We found some cool stuff using guides and just internet searches (record shops with good punk, even some good second-hand clothing in the spot that is apprently where trendy locals go to get their swish second hand clothes, etc).

Disk Union in Shinjuku was definitely worth it. There is an awesome healthy noodle on-the-go place somewhere in Shinjuku station that does vegan food (if youre into that, they advertise as HEALTHY & FAST not vegan though). You will encounter shrines all over the place even if you aren't looking for them.

Drink beer from vending machines and hoon those little iced coffees to when you're out and about and getting tired.

The Fuji Five Lakes area is beautiful.
The Peace Park in Hiroshima is interesting and quite strange (actually a really nice park but with many memorials so it's quite a heavy place if youre contemplating what happened there)
What we briefly saw of Osaka was kinda cool. It seemed a dirtier than Tokyo but awesome. The ferris wheel is awesome.
Kyoto has really amazing temples and old stuff (was only there for less than a full day).

We managed to catch the blossom season in that part of Japan, which was nice: https://scontent-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos ... 7986_o.jpg

Shinjuku is the most happening area. I stayed in both of these places recently:
