The amount of arguments youre starting over semantics whilst missing other peoples points is pretty staggering.
Why have you chosen to be such a dick about this?
This has really cemented my opinion of you.

Let's play Redswitch bingo!

[ ] Appeal to authority
[ ] Pretending he knows imaginary authority personally
[ ] Pretending he was just joking the whole time when position indefensible
[ ] Claiming expertise in an area he has no experience in
[ ] Complaining people aren't on topic when they have been discussing things directly relevant to the core topic of discussion
[ ] Discussing snowboarding in a non snowboarding thread
[ ] Number of "friends" claimed to be experts in fields of discussion on punkas now exceeds population of New Zealand
[ ] Inability to comprehend in depth discussion
[ ] Assumption the above is caused by other people not knowing what they are talking about
[ ] People he makes the above assumption about having decades of relevant first hand experience
[ ] General fuckwittery

One thing you seem to have never mentioned is the analogue side of digital playback. Most systems with great converter chips have a shit house analogue side to it. Thats why Black Lion Audio have made a mint modding digital interfaces to replace the analogue circuits. So you can bang on as much as you want about digital being a better storage but there are far too many variables in consumer electronics that make all that resolution pointless. The many variables in an anlogue system can actually be pleasing and sympathetic to the final signal, again something Digital cannot emulate.

I've been waiting on a response for this... I guess your mate had some HD cans plugged into that 'amazing' Asus DAC. Im fairly certain the analogue stage of that thing is piss weak and that the headphone amps are piss weak.

Then from Jim Williams electronics guru

I have little faith in PCI cards for high end audio mounted in the dirty computer enviroment. Just the fact that the converter is degraded from it's spec of -129 dbu noise to -124 dbu shows there are noise problems somewhere. If this was an outboard converter they might have met that -129 dbu noise spec. That requires the use of extremely low noise analog parts, like .9 nv/hz/sq noise opamps. Most end up using common 5534/2 opamps to save $.

i would love to participate or even arrange an experiment where a group of subjects are asked to tell the difference between:

Imagethe perfect analog/vinyl recording AND playback as described and advocated by nat and shane
Imagethe perfect high quality digiital recording AND playback as described and advocated by red_switch
Imagea low quality vinyl playback thru digital mediums as described by nat as being the province of 'stamp collectors' (this is almost all of the vinyl fans obviously)
Imagea recording of high quality vinyl onto a digital format and played back thru high end digital amps etc.

maybe using a high definition tape as a control, i dunno, tempted to add other combos or formats but lets not get silly right? :baton:

Through analogue mediums. As most people with bad record players plug them into a good old fashioned stereo.

Tape (Im talking about reel to reel not casettes) isn't really high definition as it has limited frequency response and dynamics, however it is sweet sounding and does magical things to music, which goes against Red witches uber clean digital format. With tape you hear a lot of the medium and hardware which I think is a good thing.

Check out ABX and Double Blind testing if you are actually interested Phil.

holy shit!!! This is far from what i was trying to inspire, was i trying to inspire anything, i don't know after reading all those pages about stuff i really don't understand or really want to. CONCLUSION: we all have our preferred formats, simply thats your preference.Digital vs analog, don't know, have lps that have later been digitally mastered, enjoy the rawness of the original, love the extra sounds i pick up on the digital. Pfffft, its fucken punk rock!
I am how ever wanting too build up a set of speakers, cabs are ex Jansen 80 vocal PA speakers, whats needed for good speakers for playing vinyl, tweeters, mids and subs? Is there better speakers out there that will get the most out of my vinyl? I only hope i don't have too read 10 pages about it :)
lets change the tempo a bit, what has changed in the world since you got into punk and do you feel punk has been an influential factor in these changes, your thoughts?
