Investing Money?

Postby xBANDITOx » Wed Oct 12, 2011 8:08 pm

Does anybody on punkas know anything about investing cash?

I know next to nothing, but I've got a little bit of money at the moment and I was wondering what I could do with it, aside from hookers and cocaina(cocaine).

buy an ounce. restructure and sell the subsidiaries for a net profit. then reinvest in a new start-up [or two].

If your cash is in the 0,000's you should be gunning for 4.4-4.49% on cash investments, if its in the 00,000's you should be gunning for at least 4.55% based on investment rates advertised. Best term would be 150-180 days, interest paid on maturity.

Shares are pretty scary right now, cash investments are your safest bet.

@steve f, is it cool if I shoot you a pm?

I really don't know anything about money/investing/anything ahah, what would be some good websites for me to research what I should be doing/looking at?

Looking to get pointed in the right direction, so I can take it from there.

This is a good start: some basic independent info - http://www.sorted.org.nz/home/sorted-sections/investing

Shares are pretty scary right now, cash investments are your safest bet.

I don't agree, but if you literally have zero knowledge of share trading, then best to stay away.
IF you decide to just stick it in a term deposit, here's a good site to compare interest rates
http://www.interest.co.nz/saving/term-d ... o-9-months

My money is in a Kiwibank Notice Saver. I haven't found anything better for short term deposits.
This is not an endorsement, you should check out their online materials to determine if it is right for you.

My cousin is adamant about silver but I don't know anything about it. He managed to convince some of my parents friends who are pretty onto it to invest a few weeks ago so it could be worth a look.

But yeah like I said I really have no idea.

yep! I left a long term relationship over a year ago with a little bit of cash and bought a 3 bedroom ex state house in a decent location the Hutt under GV when the market was good earlier this year. I have flatmates paying most of my mortgage (which works out to be about what you would pay rent for a place here) and I just pay the rates and insurances out of my wage. It's not my dream house, but seeing as I can tidy it up myself and have an ex builder dad helping me with a couple of cheap renovations, I can either keep it as a rental property or flick it off when I move on in a couple of years. My parents have done pretty well with property, so I was lucky to have them helping out, but I definitively recommend looking into it. Best decision I ever made!

I bought a place before the market dropped, and sold it a year later. I made my money back and paid for uni, but it was all luck. It was a good learning experience, but I'd only buy again if I was doing the same as you Any Day Now. It's a lot harder to get a mortgage than it was a few years ago too.

You need to be in it for the gusto if you want to make a capital gain. You also need to understand how fixed rates trend, where the best return:risk is, and what affects the market.

I'm adverse to risk, that's why I like cashed based deposits. Definitely agree you wont reach you highest possible potential return taking a fixed deposit, but you aren't subject to the risk either. Cant speak for everyone but I cant afford to lose my savings ;)
