Decent venues in CHCH

Postby fuzz » Wed Jun 15, 2011 2:57 pm

Are there any sweet venues still standing? What's still there, what's not?

There are a few venues around if you want to put on a show. It's probably easier to give one of us down here a date and let us ask around the various people etc. to work out what is available, and what is best.

yeah apparently all the venues have closed. Talked briefly to Ross @ the Dux a couple months back and he said it wasnt likely they would open anytime soon. Al's Bar is gone completely...? 2 Glory holes got knocked down.
Im on the hunt as well.

Yes, the two major venues we rarely (if ever) played at are both closed for the foreseeable future. If you are looking to book anika moa or a terrible rock band who has been played on student radio, you should probably look elsewhere. Otherwise, ignore the person who doesn't live in Chch and refer to my previous post.

can sort out a show at the old social center, run by new people but can have an AA/BYO show there, the dudes would want around $2,$3 a head for hiring it, that includes PA, lights etc etc, but we all have gear youse cunts can use for playing as well, amps, drum kit etc.

the shortlived show was there during their nz tour, was a fuckin great night

can also sort out places to play etc in dunedin if you wanna go that far south too

always keen to help out, just ask

The Navel Point Yacht Club in Lyttelton is still going- Al of Al's Bar is organising stuff there a bit, so you could contact him.
It's a cool venue, basic, has a bar and has been getting good crowds. People are going out to all kinds of shit just for something to do.

You'd want to stay away from Lyttleton I'd say fuzz. Good venues out there, but you just wouldn't get any of the people who would go to a show, going. Maybe people will turn up, or maybe they will leave right away because the music is totally different to anything that is ever played out that way.

i think the esplande in new brighton is opening up again. might be the big upstairs bar - not the small downstairs bar

Al told me his Bar is basically ok he's but just waiting for the building next door to be demolished. Do anyone local think this seems feasable that he might re-open soon?

seems feasible enough - all the streets around there are open, and the pak n save across the road is open. there are fucking heaps of old buildings around Als Bar though, so it might take a while.

yeah that's the one, haven't been out there or anything but there's been a few gigs there. dunno what galaxy is up to but pretty sure where they were is inside the cordoned off central city areas still. some record buying nerd may know more on that one.

Galaxy Records is reopening soon just next to a (pretty small) new venue called the Archive, which is in the process of getting a liquor licence.

St Asaph, between Barbadoes and Fitzgerald. The Galaxy Records bit is under construction at the moment.

Dunno about decent, but Zebedees is still going if anyone's after an AA venue.
