bush walks/fresh water swimming WEST AUCKLAND

Postby CHINASKI » Sun Feb 13, 2011 11:31 am

Yo. Anyone know any good fresh water swimming spots out West Auckland? Have visited Huia recently which was rad. Prepared to walk for a few hours if there's a payoff at the end.

I've been reading up but they don't mention swimming spots

Can't do beaches, too many set of pins, drives me fuckin crazy.

Waterfalls; a fantastic piece of advice.

Thanks for nothin'.

nothin' is my specialty, but what i meant by waterfalls is that theres usually a pool at the bottom of them, the parks/walking trails site might not mention swimming holes, but it certainly will mention any waterfalls

I used to be a ranger out in Western Parks. Check out the Karamatua Walk out by Huia. Walk about 40min keeping on the track closest to the stream. There's a side track that is unsigned and veers off to the right to the bottom of the first waterfall. Cross the stream and climb up the cliff/dirt track and then bush bash/rock climb up the next 20 or so waterfalls. Every one has adecent sized swimming hole with some decent cliff jumping spots.

There's also a waterfall out at Kare Kare that is just off the road on the left hand side. Also walk out on the beach heading South around the point and there is an old rail tunnel to walk through as well as a rad swamp to mission around in.

Also out at Cascades check out the Fairy Falls. Never swum there buts its a cool place to check out.

Also if you take Falls Road off Te Henga drive past the golf course and there is a waterfall you can swim at the base of.

There's plenty more places if you're willing to take the time to explore.

There's always the lake, never gets old. Except when you burn your feet the whole way there. Go at night.

Sweet will def check out those spots.

Just hit up Huia and did the loop walk there, had a dip in the stream, then hit up Cornwallis for the first time. Nice low key beach - water was so fuckin warm.

There's lake Pupuke on the shore if you like swimming in duck shit and storm water. The quarry beside it has a cliff for jumping off, but you might get stuck in weeds and drown.

Auckland Domain Duckpond (ADD) goes off with a good NE ground swell and a SW breeze. Tube city.

About 5kms north of Kaukapakapa there's a fairly nondescript park on the right hand side. Trek through to the waterfall and pool.

Man, for ages I was sure someone was getting the name wrong.
I've been for a few walks at the Kakamatua stream, near Huia, which is nice. When a friend started talking about Karamatua walk, I thought it was the same thing, because google maps had never heard of it.
Turns out it's called Karamatura track.
But how do you access it? Do you have to go out to Whatipu? or can you get to it from just past Huia?

Ha my bad its been a few years since I lived out those ways. Head out past Huia towards Little Huia. The rangers station is on your RHS and just before that is the turn off. If you reach Kiwanis Camp you've gone too far.
