Advice: Compact Digital Cameras

Postby Whitey » Thu Dec 09, 2010 7:14 am

So I'm looking to get one for travelling, have decided against getting an EOS since it'll be difficult to travel with due to weight and practicalitly. So I'm tossing up between a few Canon cameras, but don't know the real difference between them. I want something with decent optical zoom, but obviously want the camera to be able to take decent photos.
Here are the 4 models I'm looking at:

G12 - 5x Optical, 10 MP - $723 - $1199
http://canon.co.nz/en-NZ/For-You/Digital-Cameras/PowerShot-Digital-Cameras/G12-Camera

S95 - 3.8x Optical, 10 MP - $549 - $850
http://canon.co.nz/en-NZ/For-You/Digital-Cameras/PowerShot-Digital-Cameras/S95-Camera

SX30IS - 35x Optical, 14.1MP - $580 - $820
http://canon.co.nz/en-NZ/For-You/Digital-Cameras/PowerShot-Digital-Cameras/SX30IS-Camera

SX210IS - 14x Optical, 14.1MP - $500
http://canon.co.nz/en-NZ/For-You/Digital-Cameras/PowerShot-Digital-Cameras/SX210IS-Camera

Out of all 4 of them, judging by dpreview the S95 & G12 appear to have the best stats (from what I can see anyway) but their optical zoom is significantly less than the other two models.

Got all the price estimates from here: http://www.priceme.co.nz

Anyone recommendations/advice?

have a look on filckr.com at what sort of pics people have taken with those cameras.

do the sums - divide the number of pictures/or times you'll likely take pictures within the warranty period by the price.

also consider having a look at the Panasonic GF-1/ Olympus EP-1, they're probably a bit expensive but are the best of both worlds (compact+changeable lenses) option.

for a cheap enough and good enough quality one (backup maybs?) you can't go wrong with one of the canon a4xx's being sold cheap.
I'm assuming you want a fair bit of manual control to get your artwank on?

Want a bit of manual control so I can work towards spending money on a 'proper' camera but mainly just want something that takes good photos and from a reasonable distance - the ixus I have has 3x optical and it really doesn't get anywhere near the distance I would like ideally.
By the way, update the time in your sig big boy ;)
