Yeah, personally thought the germans played a far better passing game - with maybe the exception of the game against Spain. They would make passes to people in positions that other teams avoid and control the situation perfectly.
I think the Spanish pass too much and their style of football tends to be so conservative I lose interest.

Matt you can't see the difference between a passing team like, say, Arsenal, and Spain?

I'm not saying they play super boring football, it's just boring. Just 'cause you pass heaps doesn't make it not boring.

And Torres on form? Pshh.. He's never been half the player Villa is, though I can see how one decent season for Liverpool banging goals in against the titanic defenses of teams like Stoke might have fooled you.

Agree with you about Fabregas though. They shouldn't be playing with Alonso and Busquets.. On that note Alonso is so fucking overrated it's not funny. He's just not good at anything.

Yeah, I'm not saying just because they pass the ball a bit that makes them interesting - perhaps I wasn't clear enough. I just find their passing game (and yes, Arsenal's - in fact, Barca v Arse a few months back was fucking fantastic) a joy to watch. A whole team working in a slick manner to exploit the weaknesses of another side with skills across the board. It's the kind of football I like to watch and always enjoyed (trying) to play.

I reckon Torres is an excellent finisher and he's got pace...neither of which we've seen at all in this World Cup. Villa is definitely a better player, but it's not his role to be an out-and-out striker - his goals should complement those of a striker, not replace them. I remember when Spain played NZ last year - Torres touched the ball three times in the first 15 and had three goals. That's the kind of positioning and final touch Spain have been lacking - they need someone to do that and someone like Fabregas (or Messi, if you're looking at Barcelona) to provide the final pass. They've had to work way too hard for their goals, I reckon.

That's the difference between the Spain of '10 and the Spain of '08.

Ryan Nelsen named in world cup best XI

All Whites skipper Ryan Nelsen has been named in a football "World Cup Best XI" picked by American sports television channel ESPN.

Nelsen earned his place by "defending defiantly throughout the tournament and heroically against Italy", it said.

Last month, international football website goal.com named Nelsen its world player of the week for "inspiring his side to two draws (against Slovakia and defending champions Italy) and giving the All Whites a shot at last 16 qualification".

ESPN's Best 11 were: goalkeeper - Eduardo (Portugal), rightback - Philipp Lahm (Germany), centrebacks - Carles Puyol (Spain), Ryan Nelsen (New Zealand), leftback - Carlos Salcido (Mexico), midfield - Bastian Schweinsteiger (Germany), Xavi (Spain), rightwing - Thomas Muller (Germany), attacking midfielder - Wesley Sneijder (Netherlands), leftwing - David Villa (Spain), striker - Diego Forlan (Uruguay).

Substitutes: Justo Villar (Paraguay), Maxi Pereira (Uruguay), Lucio (Brazil), John Mensah (Ghana), Fabio Coentrao (Portugal), Mark van Bommel (Holland), Xabi Alonso (Spain), Arjen Robben (Netherlands), Mesut Ozil (Germany), Robinho (Brazil), Miroslav Klose (Germany).

Manager: Joachim Low (Germany).

Pretty weird, but cool, to have a kiwi in the best XI of a football world cup.

Don't know why they picked Joachim Low as the coach, seems his stratergy was easily overcome by Spain and i reckon the Dutch would've done them as well. Also would've picked Casillas in goal, otherwise pretty decent team.

Disappointing as. Really didn't want the Spanish to win. Some real poor calls against the Dutch. Diving really ruins the game.

any arsenal fans??!!!
CESC Fabregas donned a Barcelona shirt amid Spain's World Cup celebrations.
The Arsenal captain made it clear at the end of last season that he would love to return to the Nou Camp, where he started his career before moving to north London in 2003.

He didn't 'don' it. The shirt was forced on him and he was obviously embarrassed about it. I genuinely think he is going to stay for another season. Arsenal won't sell him unless they get a good price, and Barca don't seem to have the funds to offer a good price (i.e. had to get out a bank loan to pay wages).

Fuck Pique, fuck Puyol. Barca need to learn to shut up.

Phoenix game was pretty funny, there was so much water on the pitch. Reminded me of playing school boy football again.
Unfortunate result though!

Man United put out a decent team though. That defence shouldn't be conceding 4 goals to West Ham.

It has been a good competition for Arsenal so far this year. Been able to give fringe first team squad members some game time and now there's no excuse not to get that winning mentality back.
