The only China Mieville I've read was King Rat, which was staggeringly shit. It's a (pretentious) retelling of the Pied Piper of Hamlin, but in this case his evil flute temptations are defeated by - I kid you not - the power of drum 'n' bass.

That kinda made me write off the guy. What of his stuff should I be reading?

Perdido Street Station, Iron Council, The Scar.
All may leave you feeling mildly disgruntled, because there are so many threads left untied. I really like the imagery of the books, in the same way that the Gormenghast books are painful to read in some ways, but the imagery fills your head and stays with you afterwards.

I totally agree with him about the law, although I'm more of a rowdy anarchist than a nerdy Marxist I think that analysis is bang on the nail.

Neil Gaiman's "ocean at the end of the lane" is picking up quite a few 'book of the year' awards. Also the only book I actually bought for myself this year.
Unfortunately now I've lost it so I can't lend it to my mates :/
