Read this one recently, another wee classic from Bran. This one's got a dear leader with an unhealthy obsession for ponytails.

Recently finished the first four main books in Alastair reynolds Revelation Space book. Recently liked them, although found the ending of Absolution Gap a bit lazy?

A while back I started reading Kim Stanley Robinsons Mars Trilogy, I fucked up though and started reading the third book second due to badly labeled epub files, I realised halfway through and now have a major error and my brain doesn't know what to do.

Good shit.

I'm back on a comic buzz now after not really touching them for most of this year.

'I Like It When You Die' is the fourth album by American grindcore band Anal Cunt. The album was originally titled You're Gay, and the album cover was going to contain a mirror, but this idea was later changed

5/5 Bleak, violent and heartwarming at the same time. Great writing. Post apocalyptic is generally a win for me anyway.

Entertaining insider account of the Melbourne and Sydney rock scenes from the 60s onwards and his time managing AC/DC. Bits about several NZ bands will be of interest too. I knew the music business was brutal, but the Young brothers sound like thoroughly unpleasant people, hard arses who'll screw you over once you're no longer useful to them. Sounds like that's what happened to Brian Johnson, the hearing loss story was probably just PR bullshit.

Lots of funny bits, e.g.

An unlikely face backstage after the gig was Johnny Young, the host of Australian TV's Young Talent Time....Johnny was an old friend of Bon's from the days in Perth...Johnny had just driven around America on vacation with his son.

'You have no idea how sore my arse is', he told Bon.

Unfortunately, Bon had fogotten to flick off his wireless mic. Now a full house at the Whisky knew the unfortunate state of Johnny Young's arse.

So a good read, recommended. Your local library probably has it.

I watched the PBS documentary years ago which was really good. Basically a it's the diary of a guy who builds a cabin in the woods by himself. The dude is super humble and has lots of nice little observations about life.

Doco is on youtube:

yeh, ive watched that doco many times, its super satisfying watching him handsawing perfect planks.

he filmed the whole thing himself, just his friend narrated it after he died.

just read a book called 'cabin porn' which while nowhere near as awesome as proennoke, was pretty sweet

Just re-read Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead. A recommendation from an online friend when I was 19. Thought it was gonna be dull because the 1st time around it did little for me and I couldn't remember anything that happened in it. That's a pretty scathing assessment of Rand considering at that age I was swayed by books about Roswell aliens and alternative facts about gravity. As a full-blown adult the book was much better, though depends if you like prose that stretches words beyond their intended use. Or the absurdity of characters who embody philosophical extremes. It's not really even a spoiler to say it's the character holding the viewpoint opposed to the author who nonsensically reveals themselves to have a conceited motive. Knew the slug to the crotch was coming but kept turning the pages anyway.

I forced myself to read Atlas Shrugged and I had to stop because it sucked so bad. It is a steaming pile of shit. So is Ayn Rand.

Thought I had better give this a go. It's ok, I'm not really a fan of period drama. I find the astrology stuff with each chapter shortening by half pretty gimmicky. Although it does mean the pace is picking up.

Nearly at the end of this.

Quite enjoy his ultra rational approach to every topic. He does a good job of pointing out how every political/ethical standpoint is based on 100% mythical ideas - Reminded me of American Gods.

Reading Bold As Love by Gwyneth Jones.
It's about the UK dissolving into independent states, the revolution and social upheaval that happens, and a bunch of musicians on the summer festival circuit who get caught up in it and and up having a hand in the whole thing. I'm really liking it.

http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/180240.Just_Sex_

The past two decades have witnessed a significant shift in how rape is understood in Western societies. This shift in perception has revealed the startling frequency of occurrences of date rape, obscuring the divide between rape and what was once just sex. Just Sex? combines an overview of the existing literature with an analysis of recent research to examine the psychological and cultural implications of this new epidemic. The result is the conclusion that feminist theory on sexual victimisation has gone both too far and not far enough. The reader is presented with a challenging and original perspective on the issues of rape, sex and the body, incorporating subjects including:
* rape as a social problem
* the social constructionism of sex, subjectivity and the body
* heterosexuality under the microscope
This book succeeds in making a valuable contribution to feminist and social contructionist work on rape that will be of interest to those studying psychology, gender studies, cultural studies and sociology.
