I love the film but haven't yet read the book but your post has reminded me that I need to.

My daughter got a tin drum for her first birthday but it's not as awesome as Oscar's. Really hard to find one that's not a crappy toy.

My Journey to Lhasa by Alexandra David-Néel. Classic non-fiction adventure, shaping up to be an essential read.

Extreme Metaphors - Interviews with J.G Ballard
it's in chronological order. I'm only a few interviews in (early 70's still) - some pretty prescient stuff, some that just puts into context the kind of ideas that were around mid century.

Cursed from Birth: The Short, Unhappy Life of William S. Burroughs Jr.

Brought it more for some insight about Burroughs Sr, but really enjoyed it and am just about to order 'Speed and Kentucky Ham'.

Only have a few more pages then I am onto:

Bringing the War Home: The Weather Underground, the Red Army Faction, and Revolutionary Violence in the Sixties and Seventies. Seriously wish the youth of NZ would take some inspiration from Baader-Meinhof.

This any good? I really liked Stephen Baxters book "Evolution", but the other couple of books I tried to read (The first 2 Manifold books) seemed a bit whacky.

The Long Earth series is fucking good, and if you want a good Stephen Baxter series check out Time's Tapestry.

Smashing through the books at work lately.

Will Self - Liver
JG Ballard - Complete Short Stories V2
Jasper Fforde - Shades of Grey
And pretty much every single Cormac McCarthy book in a marathon of unrelenting TexMex insanity over about a month. Holy fuck, Blood Meridian...

Doing my first reading for pleasure all year due to school.

William Boroughs - Junky. It was alright, not my favourite of his, plus...I don't really care about junk so maybe I should have skipped it. Still, I like the way the man turns a phrase.

Currently: Tom Hardy - Jude the Obscure. Enjoying it so far.
I'm not a cool guy anymore.

Leonard Cohen - Beautiful Losers

Sexually explicit madness. The blurb on the back comparing it to James Joyce is about right, but at least the vocabulary isn't remotely as challenging. Got it for Xmas '13, the year I spent battling through Ulysses.

edit: oh yeah, can't go past mentioning the 2 glorious pages dedicated to describing constipation. Amazing.

Just finished China Mievelle - The Scar. So good, was afraid the ending was going to be shit/weird, but finished on just the right note.

Started reading Anathem because apparently it's great/mindfuck, then the Malazan series.

Gar! just gave up on Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer - Tried reading his City of Saints and Madmen a couple of years back and it's if anything, worse.
Anyone into his stuff, I liked the IDEA of it but he just introduces a bunch of stuff and keeps introducing stuff and never really follows up on any of it. Also the narrator characters speak with an annoying level of authority of a world they don't seem to know very well but are never surprised by.

Also had to quit reading Neal Stephensons REAMDE which I will go back to at some point - I just tried it too soon after reading The Peripheral (auth. Willam Gibson) and the change from extreme minimalism to extreme maximillism was a bit too much.
