Just finished Ender+Shadow saga...really bummed me out to find out afterward that Orson Scott Card is a raging homophobe, and kinda makes me rethink everything in the series. What a dick.

Attempting to read a brave new world...for a short book I'm finding it really hard to read/boring.

also chances a repost but - cool book link

Hunter S. Thompson was apparently a wifebeater. Still one of my favourite writers. Sometimes you just gotta draw the line between the work and its author...
Bukowski readers must do.

Also, I too found brave new world disappoint.

yeah fair call, and as I enjoyed the series overall I guess I'll do that with his books. In saying that though if yuk ideas creep into the writing it's a bit shit, like a dude in one of the books that gets married to a woman even though he was gay, due to a persons apparently overwhelming biological desire to reproduce....at face value I was meh, but knowing his stance on homo's it was a bit :? .

If he was a raging homophobe, why even include homosexuality in his books at all? Not commenting on it either way, just seems a bit odd.

try reading one his political thrillers. dude actually thinks fox is the only unbiased news network. [i tried to pretend it was just good characterisation without much luck]

apparently his 'homecoming' series is just the book of mormon in space.

alvin maker and ender are so fucking good though. i want to dislike them so much.

Not sure, only other mievelle book I have is perdido street station, but it's probably one of my favourite books.

Definitely him, perdido st station is on my list after reading city and the city. Him and Paolo Bacigalupi (for the windup girl) jointly won the hugo prize this (last?) year, both terrific reads.

The ending of Perdido Street Station had me in tears. It's not often books do that.

Shit, maybe I need to read more Mievelle. I only read King Rat which was hilariously terrible and pretentious. The evil Pied Piper is destroyed by the power of drum 'n' bass. Fucking awful. That totally put me off the dude.

Blogging and politics and zombies (oh my). Very readable. First in the Newsflesh trilogy. A number of nice tweaks on the traditional zombie tropes that make it worthwhile. Based on a society that's had its zombie outbreak, and has adapted. Gated communities, kids don't play outside, nobody gathers in crowds etc.

Nice commentary on the rise of bloggers as reliable news-sources in terms of disaster reporting. (I.e. Can't trust mainstream to get it right straight away, so have to triangulate the truth by reading other accounts)

Recommend. Want moar.

Sweet sounds good. I like post-apocalyptic stuff that is set a little bit after the disaster and society has begun to rebuild. Need to be more of that kind of thing, not just immediate disaster scenarios.

A guy takes a bet he can go to all of the London underground stations in 24 hours on the day before his wedding day and is accompanied by an uninvited drunken bum.

A kiwi volunteer ambulance officer/body chaser based in Thailand tells his story. Amazing that news of the tsunami didn't make Thai TV right away.
