just noticed this

does not look like it would flood?

Wait, was this a serious question? Cause I passed it today and it was about 4 feet under water

On the way out of Gisborne heading north towards the gorge to Opotiki there's a couple of cool abandoned buildings.

I'd be keen to film there - did you get some kind of permission, or just roll on in?

The tunnel at Wairau park was open when they were putting the bus lane in. i am pretty sure you would still be able to get into it without having to cross the motorway. Just park under Spotlight/Movies and hop that fence that backs onto the motorway and there should be a like man made river thing right there. the tunnel goes under the motorway then continues on after on the otherside. would probably be better to check out in the summer but last time there was some pretty sweet Graffiti down there.

im about 4 months late in replying but here we go:

Rangitoto - we have a bach there that has been in the family since the 20s. at one stage there were over 100 baches on the island - mainly at rangitoto wharf (opposite mission bay basically), at islington bay / gardiners gap (between rangitoto and motutapu) and a small settlement at mckenzies beacon (the lighthouse at the western end of the island).
there are about 25 baches left on the island now.. several oh which have been / are being restored - the govt hasn't demolished any since the mid 90s and there is a 'battle' inc ourt between the bach holders association and doc over being able to keep the remaining baches there. www.ribca.org.nz is the associations website

there is an abandoned naval base at the edge of islington bay, but is mainly demolished and just piles of rubble. not scary at all.
there are also a couple of bunkers / barracks near the summit which are moderately cool.. full of graffiti though

the underground tunnels are on motutapu, not rangitoto. as rangitoto is basically a pile of rocks it would be pretty hard to tunnel there. there are some natural lava caves / tunnels though.

probably the scariest thing on rangitoto is local maori andrew after dark.
