ATTN: Guitar Hero fans

Postby The Cancer » Thu Mar 27, 2008 8:14 pm

Hey all,

We've recently bought an XBOX360 with Guitar Hero 2 & 3 at the Kings Arms, and are looking to set up competition nights with prize money. We're looking for any and all public submissions on how to best run the competition. Key areas we're looking for feedback on are:

- Which difficulty level to run the competition around

- How to structure rounds

- What time to start things (keep in mind it's going to start on a Tuesday night, hopefully moving to Thursdays after a while)

- $10 to enter, $5 to spectate. All entries go into prize pool - winner take all; all spectator fees go towards admin and upkeep costs. Ye/ne?

- Appropriate drink specials

- Any other worthwhile feedback

Cheers

Gareth and your friendly team at the Kings Arse

I Rekon too expensive for spectators, go for gold coin More people will be enticed by this offer and youl have a much better turnout.

Also compulsory shots whenever someone pulls off a legendary Slammer on the guitar.

start on medium and run through top tier songs... then finals go into hard with bonus tracks.

if anyone can play bucket head or dragon force on hard they are the fucking man.

yeh i reckon make it $2 for spectators, charge more to enter if you must but dont push your crowd away.

seriously, i might turn away cos of $5 at the door cos im a cheap cunt, but after a few beers i might remember how easy i thought guitar hero was and have a hoon at it for $20

I reckon have different leagues possible, depending on how many people want to play.

Have a bunch of people compete in the easy, normal, hard and extreme levels. That way everyone can have a go and not be anihilated. Is that how you spell that?

Pffft samsam has nothing on me, I kicked his ass that night in hams haha. Although I better start working on my dragonforce.

The issue there is what's to stop an expert player entering the medium league and wasting everyone for the easy prize money?

higher prize money for the higher levels and you cant win more than one section

pretty simple.

have it on hard as the default for the first round, then after that round send some down for a "plate" playoff on medium, and the others up for a "cup" final on expert?

That's not a bad idea.

That's an idea we had all along, but it still doesn't really disincentivise an expert just going for the lesser, easier prize money on hand.

well... i think louckes been putting a bit of effort into doing it on real musical intruments, so those 4 clicky buttons is probably about as much easier for him to play dragonforce as it is for me to play the first few bars of 'one'

Do it on expert, both players agree on a song, highest percentage of notes wins

And make it only $2 to watch, $5 to enter, cause otherwise it's too much

Been a while since I've played, but I've made it about 30 songs through expert. Can only do about 1% on dragonforce expert but

How does this sound?:

- Single player. Highest points in a round wins.

- Start with a round robin, everyone has a turn. Highest scores (1 or 2, depending on number of competitors go through to quarters, semis and final). Round robin is on medium. All knockout rounds on hard.

- $10 entry. No spectator fees. Kids can come with their parents. $5 pints. $2 hot chips. Free pool.

- First, second and third prize. First and second are cash. Third is a bar tab.

- Sunday afternoons/evenings - all entries in by 5pm, competition starts around 6pm.

The setup we have for this is off the hook - as immersive a Guitar Hero environment as you will get.

For a start we're using an XBOX360. We've squared everything away with Microsoft and Activision; and yeah, it's non-profit. The prize pool is divided up among the winners, and we simply make our profits over the bar.
