Being a kitchen hand

Postby nicola_yeah » Mon Aug 20, 2012 9:35 pm

desperate/10

40 hour weeks doing this. I come home saturated and aching. This job is definitely not suited for a girl like me. whinge whinge whinge. Bring on pay day.

Who else has been desperate enough to be a kitchen hand?

Started as a dishwasher and now I work as a chef. It's a sweet as job , get good feeds and learn useful shit as you go. Sucks being at the bottom of the food chain (literally) but thats the problem with having no qualifications at all... you gotta start somewhere

I worked as a kitchen hand for a catering place. Was one of my better jobs actually.

Fuck working in a restaurant kitchen though.

Started as a KP before working up the ladder, i quite enjoyed it actually. The banter in kitchens is the best. Drugs and booze were rife though

Worked as a cook/kitchen hand from the ages of 13-17. Now whenever I have to wash dishes at work, I am reminded of that horrid period in my life.
(Although there were a few perks, doing it at the Trust Stadium meant getting to watch all the events there, and getting to steal beers as long as I could fit my skinny arms into the locked fridges ;) )

Did it for 9 months last year. Then chucked my thumb in the meat slicer and got out if it.

worst job I've had to date.

first year out of school/home, working shit hours for (mostly) shit cunts. steam burns and perpetually soggy hands.

yeah this. started doing a few desserts and salads here and there but couldn't be fucked with the whole deal for long. bar work suited me heaps more as i found out a year or so later.

Have done lots of kitchen-bitch/ sink-pig work, and used to quite like it in the right kitchen, where there are good people, and you are treated as one of the team, rather than the scum. Chefs should all do some time as a sink pig, and then they would have the understanding that everything stops when the dishes don't get done fast.

I was a dish pig for about an hour and a half. It sucked so bad that I just walked out on my first shift.

Have you considered being a diver? I hear there is great potential in that area.

I don't think it matters, like doing beauty therapy the only people who gets jobs are the next round of trainers.

The one with tanks obviously, huge opportunities in dive instructing. Hard to know if the opportunities are bigger than beauty though. Worlds your oyster.

And I suppose that there are limited people training for this. You might be right, but I'd look at their employment statistics to be sure.
