An'ar'tica (lots of pics mainly)

Postby Red_switch » Fri Nov 25, 2011 12:29 am

Fucking fantastic/10. TRread title reflects a night at the Southerner, a pub at McMurdo. I could shit on for ages about how fabulous the place is (especially once you get away from base and into the field), but a bunch of pics is probably more appealing.

Flying down, this is what a helicopter looks like inside a USAF C-17 Globemaster.

Image
C-17 parked up at the sea ice airfield. Landing in a plane like that, at a place like that, is an out of it feeling.

A nice wee line on the back of Castle Rock, Ross Island. Erebus in the distance.

Our field site was on the Southern McMurdo Ice Shelf in the vicinity of Minna Bluff, visible here as the blue ridge in the distance between White (left) and Black (right) islands, about 70 km from Scott Base. Pressure ridges/waves visible in the sea ice in the foreground.

Minna Bluff from camp, and some serious snow drifts around the Hagglund and Trailer following a bit of wind.

Mt Discovery and sun halo/dog from camp.

I spent most of my time in the field waiting for this thing to do its thing. Trimble R8, awesome bit of kit.

Image
Sastrugi on the ice shelf was up to 50 cm high. Alternating patches of glacial/marine/refrozen ice and sastrugi like that does not make for fantastic skidoo terrain.

Good idea to turn around and go back the way you came when you come across cracks like these...

Scallop shell exposed as marine ice has ablated, would have been entrained as ice accreted at the base of the ice shelf.

Pretty damn awesome place to go. That's a very small selection of photos (only the quick-shot jpegs, still 300 odd RAW images to sort through...)

About 5 hours on the C-17, 8 on the LC-130.

The only way you can really get to Scott Base is to either work there on the base staff, or to go with a science event (what I did). Lots of roles at Scott Base that you can apply for depending on relevant skills, fairly stringent medical requirements though. If you're really interested, check out the Antarctica NZ website. If you're on the study buzz another option could be to do the grad certificate in antarctic studies at Canterbury... kinda like a holiday on the ice, haha. But yeah, if you're working the season is October-Feb, working 6 day weeks.

The tourist option is largely restricted to cruises, and they are mainly concentrated around the peninsula (although some do visit the Ross Sea region later in the season when Ross Island is accessible by boat). Generally pretty expensive, but probably totally worth it. If you were really interested in that I could possibly point you in the right direction operators wise...

No i'm not that interested but they are just questions that came to mind.

what about the bases? how many people would you think are there at any one time? i just think of 'the thing'. a small buch of people crammed into a few sheds.

is there streets? not asphalt ones but ice ones.

Scott Base is relatively small, about 30 staff and capacity for about 50 scientists, so a max of about 80 people. It peaks around now. All the main buildings at Scott are connected by indoor walkways, there are streets of sorts, lots of vehicles around, and roads to McMurdo and the airfields.

McMurdo has a capacity of about 1100, it's at about that now. It's a shit of a place, like a dirty alaskan mining town with some science labs tacked on. A lot of the people there are support staff, and they have way fewer opportunities for getting out and doing things than the guys and gals at Scott Base. That's McMurdo in the background of the shot of the exterior of Discovery Hut. It certainly has streets, snowy/icy while I was there, but by mid summer its a mud pit. The big dark brown buildings in that shot are some of the accommodation blocks.

The bar at Scott Base is solid, beers are cheap (like two bucks). There are three bars at McMurdo, I only went to one, the Southerner. Since most of the crew I headed there with were Scott Base planties/tradies/mechanics we went to the "working mans pub". Sixers of mexican corona sold over the bar in cartons for eighteen bucks, can live with that. We couldn't really drink at Scott Base the last few days I was there, since the King of Malaysia was in town.
I think it's lint.

Yea, partly due to the light, although the fact they are hosted on fb probably doesn't help the quality.

RE PS. Cheers! Thought I got them all the first time, fixed 'em now, everyone has to look at the first post again! They are goodies!

be pretty hard to fill a p bottle in a 40 knot wind with decent windchill if you weren't gonna touch your dick :baton:

actually scary moment = pissing in a bottle in your tent and hoping you can stop before the bottle is full...
