Drinking wine

Postby General Mutante » Fri Oct 14, 2011 8:59 pm

I am currently hooning a comedy sized 1.5 litre bottle of Pasqua Sangiovese. Slightly better than cask wine. Though anything too flash is deeply unpunx and I would be ashamed. It goes well with pizza.

Should move over here, bro. 4L goon casks of shockingly drinkable red for like $8. Bit of a summer tradition for a lazy Sunday down the park.

Good thread. Mainly because it reminded me that the GF left half a bottle of Banrock Station Shiraz on my shelf. Which I shall now consume.

I'd probably be dead of alcohol poisoning within 6 months at those bargain prices.

I've been broke and rocking $2.50 bottles of aldi wine. shit is undrinkable and yet i manage to consume vast quantities of the shit.

now i have a decent and regular pay check i will be upgrading to goon again. and with the arrival of summer, probably some goongria.

I'm down south next weekend, and I am going to get on the piss with a mate of mine who makes some nice rough red that goes well with salami. It's about time I caught up with that bloke, he's a GC.

Just polished off a bottle of Gunn Estate merlot cabernet. Tasted like cough medicine.

astrolabe is incredible. i didn't really like savvys until i had that one. downed a whole bottle one evening. only wanted a glass.

pretty funny how there are apparently 4 containers of it stuck on astrolabe reef at the moment.

as for fat bird i couldn't disagree more. anything that is sold as 'red wine' should be avoided. better to get a bottom of the barrel shiraz or merlot, surely?

nah, don't drink the 'red wine'- they sell a sav. Their chardonnay tastes like cat piss flavoured meths. I took half a bottle home from work on Friday night. Instant headache after a glass on Saturday night.
I'm definitely heading down the I would rather have less of something good path when it comes to wine. At the very least it will save me a rotten gut. I learnt that from Mutante. :)

Church Road Chardonnay. Often on a $15 special at New Worlds. Sadly whatever year they've just started carrying is very notably not as good as previous years.

There's another 2 tolerable chardonnays NW carry cheap. I forget which; one is called something like Mcgiurs, about $10 regular price.

If you like sparking Banrock Station's sparking Chardonnay based wine was excellent - and often as cheap as $8. But it's been sickly sweet rubbish for the last year or so. :(

And when I'm too poor, September was a good month for Country Crock.

Good cheap Pinot Noirs?

I get Montana South Island Pinot Noir when it's on special at $12 or less.

if a Pinot Noir is less than $30 it's not worth it.

that being said i did have a good wild fermented pinot at a Pasquale tasting recently which retails for 18 or so. it was a lot lighter/aromaful than the norm which i really rated.

The ok cheap Chardonnays I discovered from New World were: McGuigan Private Bin (pretty sure it's about $10), and Longridge (a very nondescript looking bottle).

yep, McGuigan is not bad
Also last year Roaring Meg Pinot Noir- which is usually pretty pricey- sold a whole lot as Festival for $9 a bottle at pac and slave. I got put onto that by Al from Al's Bar. I drank well for several weeks :)

If anybody out there is unsure about a bottle of wine, I'm only too willing to help out. Just PM me for my address and post me the wine in question. I'll drink it all and then let you know whether it was good or not.

Wolfblass Red Label Cabernet Merlot 2010. Not the best year but now that this one has also gone tits up the point is moot. It was on special and it's drinkable. It's taking the edge off nicely.

part time professional wine snob. usually involves at least 1 tasting every other week, and often more if i'm around when a rep pops in. i will prob start going to trade shows too. even at cost i generally can't ever afford to buy anything, but drinking is essentually part of the job so that doesn't matter too much.

Looks like when you put an unoaked bottle next to an oaked one?

Been working through all the Primitivo's I can get my hands on, finally managed to track down a Zinfindel the other week (same grape, different name/climate). Primitivo is an excellent wine match for curry goat, thinking about planting some somewhere.

I'm not sat at my usual desk and there's a bottle of Saints Shiraz here. The urge to drop everything and start hungrily gulping at it like a baby at a tit is almost unbearable.
