Just saw that you guys are getting GABS (The Great Australian Beer Spectapular) in Auckland this year. That's awesome! I hope it all goes well (other than the inevitable whining about $$$). It was probably my best day of the year last year and i was sick as fuck so could only really taste sours and barley wines properly.

Oh and I used to work for the Sprig, beautifully done classic brews. Tracey the owner and head brewer is one badass fucking female. Quite a different vibe from Moon Dog where i'm at now, who're the opposite of classic. Or classy really.
Our dark sour is nearly ready after 8 months in Pinot barrels, last years was banging.
Image
Our mango passionfruit sour is out this week, and wasn't fermented in chardonnay in barrels this time round. Interested to do a side by side and note the differences from last year, which was.

If you ever make it down to Marlborough they Sprig & Fern pubs where you can sample any 6 of the 12 or more beers on tap for $18. The sample sizes is generous too, close to a half pint size.

I don't know if you can get it in NZ, but Kooinda Black IPA is really good. Emerson's make a black IPA too, The Rapture I think it's called.

im def on a dark IPA buzz, drank a couple of india darks last night, plus some awful bavarias and a kingfisher, not feeling great now.

i said above that the sprig and fern brew was about the same as the mount brewing co one, but i take it back, sprig and fern is far superior.

sprig and fern pub will certainly be on my list, havnt tried any of their others, but i probably should

I reckon the Pilsner is one of the best in NZ at the moment!

Are there any farmhouse-style breweries in NZ? Someone should really start one! Could use all kinds of native ingredients to make some pretty unique beers, ala Jester King in Texas and 2 Meter Tall in Tassy. Mmmmm Jetser King......

Have not had a beer for 4 days. Gotta be a record.

Last session was at a shoe with dubpunker. Drank many beers and schnaps and had a cool time.

Also, I discovered the cheapest, shittest beer... It's called PILSATOR and is about 58c for a 500ml bottle. Extra bonus: people give you spare change if they see you drinking it in public.

yep, enjoying the scotch ale right now. But as long as it was cold and wet it would probably do the trick.

The Mussel Inn might be the closest thing to it. I definitely think this should be done. I'm still looking for sloes (blackthorn, Prunus spinosa) in NZ, so I can make sloe gin.

no, they are like sloes, and are a cross between blackthorn and perhaps boxthorn..?

the 'sloes' are more elongated like a hawthorn berry, tho i doubt thats what they are crossed with, otherwise the plant looks the same as blackthorn, most farmers call it boxthorn, tho its visually different.

saw some pictures of sloes online that had the same shape, figured it was just a variant, made sloe gin, got very very sore guts for all it tasted nice.

hmm, different families, so I don't know if it would be a cross, or something else. There are a whole lot of thorny bastard hedge species in NZ, and many have fruit.

well i saw and collected them from maramarua to the hills above raetihi, some call it blackthorn, but i think the flowers a bit wrong too, i cant remember now, when i collected i knew it might be a hybrid, but thought it would be fine, not aware of any of that species being toxic, i suppose i shouldnt discourage you, but i did get crook guts, maybe just too astringent.

I'm slightly biased but the Sprig & Fern Long Black IPA was/is delicious. Just moved to Scotland so am exploring beers around here - any suggestions welcome.

My mates drink at the sprig all the time, because local. I don't find it that interesting.
I had one of those brew dog 15% barrel aged stouts in the weekend, that was bloody delicious.

Also I like the forum upderp thanks J
