There's some English hipster bearded wankery fish and chips place down the road but it's a rip off. Fish is decent but I paid 14 euro and chips portion wasn't enough to make a sparrow fart. Sticking to my beloved 2am drunken pickled herring snacks.

A German mate showed me his dinner the other night, "häckerle". Which is soused herring (Matjes) all mashed up with boiled egg, onion and gherkin and spread on black bread. Or you can bung it in a baked potato. He's from the east close to the Polish border, and the dish is originally Silesian. Sounds pretty fucking awesome to me. Have to give it a try sometime.

Just to further stray from fish n chips because fuck yous. Behold, the almighty Matjesbrötchen! Self-built for lunch today. Soused herring with a little remoulade, raw onion, gherkin and cucumber. Classic Hamburg sando. Goes well in the rain, after x8 Jever, and St Pauli vs HSV 6:0. Scrummy.

oh very fancy. come home and stuff your face with with some terakihi wrapped in greasy white paper (newspaper no longer legal). What do Germans know about kai moana anyway? they just eat sausages and drink beer all day. (actually that doesn't sound so bad)

I do not recommend fish and chips from the pub at Balfour. Super greasy and just way too far from the sea. The chips by themselves are almost doable, but only because the other options are about 30km to Lumsden or 40km to Gore.

On the other hand the fish and chippy on the main St of Hokitika was as perfect as ever when I was there the other day. It's a tradition to take them to eat down at the river mouth. They also do the option of a pottle of gravy to dip your chips in. And their corn, potato and melty cheese balls are great.

Epsom f&c on Manukau Rd is really, really good too.

I would second that enthusiastically.
After moving to central AK suburb, it was hard finding a F&C shop to form a long-term relationship with - until Epsom F&C on Manukau Road ...

Sweet, keep them in business until I eventually move back to Akld Central, hopefully in a year or two. What is/isn't still around could be worth a whole review thread of its own then.

Looking at Google Maps it seems there's more around central I haven't tried than ones I have tried now, which could be a good sign. The F 'n' C business may have life in it yet. I should send them all the photo of the Welly Region Waffle Dog I posted on page 3. Last time I was in Auckland I tried The Fish & Chip Shop on Sandringham Rd. It was ok for a 'chain' store.

I kinda knew my fav no-frills Grey Lynn chippie couldn't last though. Looks to be a vegan store/deli now.

Fuck me, this chippy in Leeds looks like they know what they're doing:

I hope this bloke hasn't suffered a cardiac arrest yet. He seems like a gc and the popularity of this channel seems to have pushed his quest for absolutely stonking junk food meals into overdrive. Live fast die young I guess.

The Burger Shack in beachlands was hands down the worst feed of fish n chips I've ever had. I've been hanging out for a good kiwi fish n chip feed ever since I was here last July, and sadly this was my first experience of the trip.
I went there, as for some absolutely bizarre reason I was in Beachlands and the reviews were really positive, and I really can't fathom how or why.
The Paua fritter literally looked like a chocolate pikelet, it was straight up offensive. The chips were almost passable. The deep-fried mussels were at best acceptable and the fish itself was pitiful, both in its size and taste.
My mate got the Mexican chicken burger. She threw it out before finishing it. It looked shit, it had tomato sauce and beetroot in it. Weird for a Mexican themed burger.
I got a "sea dog" as the concept of it cracked me up. It was gross but that was to be expected. Also tried a "potato onion and cheese ball". It was deep fried mashed potato. Like, just potato, the size of a tennis ball, and weirdly it was the nicest thing we got from this shitter of a joint.
We all felt ill and actually juast gave up on the day and went to bed. It actually ruined our day. If I had a time machine, before I did the classic "go back and kill hitler" manuever, I'd go back and stop myself from going to this chip shop.
Beach lands is an odd spot and this chip shop is paru as. They will be receiving a full and scathing review on @dave.brown.reviews

First time I tried paua fritter was when a friend's mum made them with pancake batter. Those were good though.

That chicken burger with tomato sauce ought to be a crime. Or at least named after Paul Henry.
