Indeed, err umm congrats I guess! NZ is a pretty damn good spot to be in right now though. Not crazy enough myself, but my sister (in Melbourne) is due end of April so I'm gonna be an uncle for the first time. Dunno when I'll get to meet my niece in person.

Oi pert. Give us more life updates. What did you have for breakfast, what colour socks are you wearing? What kind of weird sport or musical endeavor will you force on your future child as to live through them vicariously

I'd be weary of throwing the decision out to the internet, or you'll end up with a Girly McGirlyface

For some reason I find it more difficult to warm to any girl names. Bring back Mildred because Millie is a good nickname.

Cindy is good. Pays homage to the g.c in charge of nz.
Lola is a strippers name Pert. May aswell call her Chesty Laroo, which is a fantastic simpsons reference, but also a terrible name for your kid.

Mildred is atrocious. That is worse than lola.
Use this oppurtunity to make reference to a powerful empire.... behind every great man is a greater woman...... call her Eva Braun haha sigh.
Nah do what Nuclear Death Terror did with their band name... write all your ideas down on paper and put them in a hat... then draw them out blindly

I tend to frown on diminutives/pet names being made the actual name on record. Eg. if I wanted a Lily I'd name the girl Lillian. Then she has two options to go by in life. Likewise Cyndi ought to be Cynthia or something in the books. Grumble grumble trends grumble.

Current top 100, I suggest avoiding trendy ones like Harper or Willow cause they'll date her in future. Same as every Darren today is about 55.

Haha this is my opinion too - Initially Lucy and I were convinced we were going to have a boy, so when we were discussing boy names I'd correct the diminutive name she suggested everytime. Lucy was not pleased, and we haven't discussed girl names yet

Horrible American trends to avoid include using surnames like Madison, Mackenzie, McKenna, (they're ok as middle names if they're actually from your whakapapa), misspelling otherwise common names like Megyn so that she has to keep on "correcting" the teacher, thinking turning "-ly" into "-leigh" somehow makes a name more feminine or more sophisticated, and turning perfectly good boys' names like Ashley into girls' names (Ryan is under threat too).

Names are hard. We had our youngest's girl name sorted as we pulled into the parking lot of the radiographer and then it turned out he was a boy so we didn't name him until three days after he was born.

My oldest was named about ten years before he was born.

Our rules were: no biblical names, reasonable to spell, nothing common, but nothing too freakish they would have to repeatedly spell out/get made fun of.
