Bill English perhaps. People celebrating about the resignation are failing to see the big picture... 50% of voters still back National, and all of the alternatives to Key are far worse. Bill English? Paula Bennett? Judith Collins? It's like celebrating that Clinton lost only to then realise Donald Trump got in. This isn't a win for the left by any stretch of the imagination. Just a reshuffle.

Andrew Little has already said that he's staying as the party leader into the next election which leaves Labour with the same seemingly piss-weak and pale leadership that it's always had in the eyes of the public leading into the last 3 elections. Before Shearer became party leader the unions made it clear they wouldn't support Grant Robertson & Jacinda Ardern being a new progressive party leadership because they were too worried about a gay person being at the top. Nothing has fucking changed one. Labour is still utterly ineffective in terms of invigorating the left, and the youth, to actually get out and vote.

The left is still it's own biggest enemy. We're all fucked. Namaste.

Do they though? it seems a lot of "dont care" voters back john key because they believe the bullshit and think he's a good kiwi bloke they could have a bbq with, and some people just seem to like backing who they think will win, as if they're polling well they must be a good choice.
Most of the alternatives are not widely liked, so national will lose a lot of votes after building the last 10 years all around "team key". Dont even think bill english would want another crack after his 20% effort last time he ran. Cant see 50% of the population voting for something lead by bennett or crusher.
Could also end up with a bunch of messy shit from the next in lines infighting for leadership, similar to what labour had a few years back.
Still whoever replaces him has a year until the next election, hopefully labour can sort their shit enough by then, or Winston might get into double digits and control things.

I'm trying to be pessimistic here! You are quite right though. I hope there's a real bloodbath for party leadership that shines Andrew Little and Labour in a more favourable light. It's certainly true that English and Collins are nowhere near as popular as Key.

Any idea who Andrew Little has in mind for deputy PM? I've voted Greens and Internet Party last two elections so haven't paid toooo much attention to recent Labour goings on.

xCaptainx pipe in with some pro-National rhetoric?

deputy was old annette king last time i heard. Really needs to get robertson in there as deputy i reckon.

Looks like a lot of the nats are jumping in for leadership, so hoping it becomes a mess, collins will make sure of that.
they need to get 50% of the nat mp votes to get through and then run it by the other parties that they're in cahoots with (act, maori, united future), so could get good if there are 5 or 6 candidates to split the votes and drag shit out.

I voted National as I looked into each policy and areas of importance for me, and felt they provided the better options for my priorities.

I also haven't really liked Labours leadership or key messages for quite some time, and was put off by the unions power to veto who I felt would have been quite good leadership and a stronger centre left party.

That being said, I have to do some further research as while I felt the National vote was the most sensible at the time, I don't have much confidence in the majority of leadership candidates being presented. I really need to do some research into alternatives to labour that don't reek of well....labour, and are still progressive (not saying National currently is, but I guess this gives me a good opportunity to review my priorities again)

Other than the fact he's only been an MP since 2011 he's basically just really boring in the public eye. He hasn't had time/opportunity to bring about much change. He doesn't instil confidence in the Labour party enough to actually make people want to get out and vote which will be his biggest problem to tackle. He does seem to say and do the right things, but the media don't really pay much attention to him at all because he's just not aggressive. He never really attacks JK/National for so many things that he could, and more importantly he should have told the unions to get fucked and taken Grant Robertson as his Deputy PM. (He didn't because he's from a union background and knows full well they don't want a gay Labour leader.)

He just tweeted saying "John Key has served New Zealand generously and with dedication. I wish him and his family the best for the future." Man that's some boring shit to say for possibly the most destabilising event of the National Party in the last 10 years. This is 2016 damn it. He should be in the media poppin' bottles and shit!

Unless of course he's saving it all up and when it comes election time he's going to unleash a torrent of pent up fury against National and actually start creating some headlines... *crosses fingers*

Feel free to correct/add to this, anyone.
