American Politics Thread AKA The FacePalm Thread
Re: American Politics Thread AKA The FacePalm Thread
Sorry phil, I just skimmed it, and I was just saying for me, the pragmatism of the Greens is appealing, that and the 10% odd that they usually manage to get is something to build on. I think MMP is great, in that we can vote for any party and it'll count (as long as we can get rid of the threshold (there's some other changes I'd make to MMP too but that'd be a good start)).
You're right that does sound pretty bad, and it's definitely cronyism, which is corrupt, I'm not sure I'd personally write them off over this but if there were further instances I'd have to chuck 'em.

Re: American Politics Thread AKA The FacePalm Thread
well i dont know personally about other instances, but i have had people from other alternative industries say the same thing, and if youve had even the slightest interest in natural building or eco-products you would know they are all prohibitively expensive in this country, shit even double glazing is still artificially expensive.

Re: American Politics Thread AKA The FacePalm Thread
I'm not sure alternative building products being expensive is all the Greens fault. Everything in NZ is expensive fullstop. The cost per metre to build a house has at least doubled in the last five years.

yeh the greens are fuckin paragons, they pretend to represent you and you refuse to admit they are fallible, cool.

Re: American Politics Thread AKA The FacePalm Thread
i've only ever worked closely with the greens on animal testing issues and they are far from infallible. you can have one mp totally opposed and working hard to stop it then at the same time have another saying we need to do loads of animal testing of ge products that are already being used by people. not what you're talking about above but, you know, my two cents haha. they're far from perfect but if you're happy with taking a lesser of all evils approach...

Re: American Politics Thread AKA The FacePalm Thread
i honestly just fuckin hate them, its like people apologising for some gang they are hanging out with, sure some of them are bad cunts, but old five-dog hes a good cunt, bought some really poor family a trampoline, or pays to take the kids to the pools, im sure hes fucking great, but that doesnt mean the other stuff is fucking ok, and basically, by supporting them, thats what youre saying.

Re: American Politics Thread AKA The FacePalm Thread
nail in the coffin for any hope of ending my green party antipathy was when they ruled out working with mana-internet.
fuck them, they are no better than labour.

you know this is actually pretty accurate though i'd say that if you looked at the good and bad both gangs and the greens do the greens would have more on the good but i get your point and it does apply to me. any support i have for them isn't for the party, it's for literally one or two individuals who have done enough for me that i'd consider to do otherwise being ill-mannered and poor form on my part.

im not sure what good the greens do except promote their own personal insanely expensive eco companies that serra thinks has nothing to do with them.

Re: American Politics Thread AKA The FacePalm Thread
I wouldn't say they were infallible, not sure where you got that from. They are a bunch of people from different backgrounds working under a common umbrella. In my experience a few are onto it and I think have the best intentions. Some are complete douches and I hate to think how anyone works with them, and a few are complete fucking nutters. A bunch had a three day meeting at a place I was working at last year, and in general were a pain in the arse~way more than the luxury punters who usually helicoptered in.
Like any organisation some have agendas. I don't agree with some of their policies (banning glyph, really! ?) but they probably still represent my views better than any other party.
Re the building thing, you really do blame them for all of that? Remember they have never been in power. Even if a change with their name on it is called, they don't retain control over what ends up going through.

not a ban, a restriction on use in public places until the EPA reassesses. while you'd be right if you said it's a policy most likely based on pandering to the hippie/soil and health assoc. types in the party. its not really massively unreasonable, though quite likely an over-reaction, given the WHO recent recategorisiation as "possibly carcinogenic". that's the nature of parties though, everyone gets to push their issue, when they do a lot of work to help the party you let them have their go at making policy. then you have to give and take and try and make everything as reasonable as possible. i wouldn't be surprised if a full ban may have been proposed and got shot down but i'd be speculating there...

There might be a few individuals who have levels of woo approaching that guy, but I think the party as a whole is way more centre

Re: American Politics Thread AKA The FacePalm Thread
IT was essentially a draw wasn't it? Both were setting around 49% at 97% returned, with Clinton leading by about a fifth or a percent.
Which I guess can be seen as a victory, as he was basically a nobody until a few weeks ago. At least that was the first time he started getting more than a brief mention in the herald or times here.

im quite excited at the prospect of bernie getting in, but i feel trepidatious too, neo-libs have proven they are ruthless, and they represent, more than the countries they purport to, powerful corporations...

Yeah I imagine plenty of people predicted Obamas assassination, but in reality he wasn't that radical. Sanders though.

yeh, i dont think they would want it to be an assassination like kennedy, but if they cant discredit him and his policies to the public, then how else will they get rid of him?
maybe just a rigged election?
