Thirsty Dog lately

Postby Oi! the avatar » Tue Jan 03, 2012 2:48 pm

At the risk of sounding like a shit stirrer I am the only person who's finding $8.50 for a (so called) "pint" at the Dog too expensive these days? I was annoyed when the price rose to $8 for the new range of (so called) "house" beers last year, but it's just gone up again to $8.50 so I'm def getting over it now. I'm thinking I'll either be spending more time at Whammy, or hiding a stash of beers next time there's a gig at the Thirsty I want to go to.

$8.50 a pint is pretty standard these days, any bars around k rd have a decent happy hour these days?

Whammy/Wine Cellar mainly for the convenience of having a liquor store opposite St. Kevin's Arcade with Myers Park at the bottom of it where other like minded people from the same bar go to do the same shit. Seems the most social and diverse to me. Whammy seem to reduce the prices a bit when it gets late and the bartenders hook it up every now and then which is rad.

Can't stand Tabac or Rising Sun.

not 100% sure but i'd say both whammy and thirsty are both around the 170 people capacity or so. whammy's drinks were way cheaper last time i was there. also the wine cellar (part of whammy) is good for small, intimate shows.

kings arms is around the 400 - 500 capactiy and sometimes they do decent drink specials for gigs.

i think the winchester is doing gigs again. no PA though but it's a working man's club so the booze is pretty cheap.

that's true for a lot of places but there's also a few pubs around with $5 happy hour pints and house beers at $6 - $7 a pint. i get it that everything is getting more expensive and pubs are struggling to make ends meet. but increasing prices like that just means less time drinking inside the pub and more time drinking at home / in the carpark.

Haven't been there for ages but there is a metal show coming up there soon so I'm keen to check it out. Otherwise Thirsty is still my venue of choice, there is something about Whammy I just don't like.

ive mostly had good times at whammy, but it really does fucking suck, everyone crammed into that alley smoking is a real shitshow, especially when the band dudes want to get their gear out thru a pack of bolshy drunks.

i think the problem with whammy is the booth setup is all designer and vogue or something, and the decor is all dark and shit, which doesnt bother me in theory, but in practice it makes me feel like im on the set for some crappy afterschool 'youth' program.

Many Auckland City bars reached the $8 beer mark years ago, and with poorer selections at that, so no complaints about Thirsty from me. All good if more punk gigs go to Whammy instead though. Couldn't care less about a venue's decor.

Whammy Bar capacity is 250 according to the FB page

If Simon (the owner of thirtsy) was able to he'd have cheaper booze. Having a whinge about it on a forum is pretty fucking lame to be honest. He loses plenty of money by letting our shitty bands play so he's got to try and get the cash back somehow. Ak would be pretty shit (live music wise) if the Thirsty wasnt around so its pretty shit to try and discredit a good cunt on here. Its not as if he's some fucking rich hospitality mogul. Fucking good on him for keeping the place going for as long as he has. How about you open a fucking bar and see how easy it is to stay afloat in Auckland.
Sorry to get all angsty about it but trying to write the guy off on a forum which a lot of his customers frequent is pretty fucking shit house/poor form.

yeh, the thirsty dog is sacrosanct cos the owner has friends on this website and in the punk scene, so watch your back, a prominent member of the scene describes it as his living room, and is quite prepared to call in back up if he sees somebody he doesnt like there.

say whatever you like about whammy or anywhere that nobody cool works at tho

you know all of that could have been said without claiming that this guy was trying to discredit the owner of thirsty dog, hes nothing but an indicator of market forces, you cant blame him for not wanting to spend that much money on drinks.

get some perspective, as i pointed out, nobody is defending whammy, but they have punk gigs, reeks of hypocrisy and favouritism.

Uh, don't actually MORE 'cool' people work at Whammy? Like, people associated with underground music and shite...

Anyway - I've had loads of fun at either bar. I prefer Whammy for some reason though, probably because the beer is cheaper.

i dunno, it might not be the right kind of cool, doesnt effect my point anyway.
thirsty dog isnt above criticism simply cos the owner is a nice guy, and its pretty insulting to be told to shut up about it just cos somebody knows the owner.

Never been to the TD until last week when I needed a beer. Gave us free tastings of house beer so we could pick the best one, pretty standard price for a pint of decent beer, nice area to smoke out back away from everything else. Would trade again.

I'm not defendigng Whammy because the reasons I like it and what has been stated against it are rather subjective whule all that has really been mentioned about TD are liquor prices.

I'll level shit thoug, TD is full of miser late 20s quasi punks in cheese cuttters who talk about DKM while Whammy is full of rad d00ds who aren't about to die lol

not commenting on auckland bars i know nothing about but when people try and say it's not the bars fault for charging so much for beer and say it's because of the breweries etc or whatever ya got to wonder when they also charge $5 for a bottle of bundaberg ginger beer that usually sells for less than $3 in a dairy. on the rare occasions i go out to a bar the price has stopped me buying even one when i'd probably drink a few throughout the night if they were less. they'd make more money off selling me three bottles of it at $3.50 than no bottles at $5 surely. and they wouldn't have to wash the glasses from water too. instead of making a little bit of money out of me i end up costing them money by going out ha.
