Political Compass

Postby BigNanaJez » Tue Nov 08, 2011 8:23 pm

I found this REALLY interesting.

Firstly, where the NZ parties currently stand http://www.politicalcompass.org/nz2011

Image

But then, where I stood! I took the test to see where I was on the scale http://www.politicalcompass.org/test

Feel free to share your results, I was pretty surprised to find I was

Economic Left/Right: -6.75
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -6.10

Well that's the thing, I thought I'd be left of the mark, but I never thought I'd be such a fuckin hippie.

I mean you've seen me out, I wear proper clothes etc

I'm sure I did it a couple of years back and I'd gone further toward the centre, I guess not.

Actually quite surprised, figured I would have mellowed in my old age.

This is the thing.. I'm betting most kiwis would end up in the bottom left corner.. yet so many of us vote the other way

I think a lot of people would at least question NZ's politics a little more if they did tests like these - thoughts?

Interesting how their NZ chart has changed compared to the 2005 one, dunno how much of that is subjective:

Economic hasn't changed since I last took the test, but I've gone way hell further towards Libertarian. How did I get so soft?

The only one I thought was weird in the first one was ACT, then I remembered who's in charge now.

I think it may have been due to my increased use of 'strongly disagree/agree' this time around - instead of just 'disagree/agree' last time, but couldn't be sure. I'd say I was definitely harsher on the religion questions than last time.

for ease of comparison:

2005:
Image

2011:
Image

no nz first on the current one? yet the progressives are there despite anderton retiring. and no conservative party.

most of the changes seem reasonable to me. the biggest change looks like act, the act faction that tended toward libertarian ideas has now been well and truly beaten by the authoritarian side and this shows that.

the rest seem like minor movements and reflect policy roughly i think. except labours imo. i don't think them moving to the right is accurate, their policy changes since the last conference and the big announcements reflect a more traditional left stance than the have in the last couple of decades. o'connor describing the trickle down theory that leads to tax cuts for the rich and business as "the rich pissing on the poor" in their opening tv broadcast wouldn't have been likely in 2005 for example. not really sure how they've worked out the parties positions though.

and yeah agree with the comment about if most nzers did the survey they'd come out more lefty than the party they support. may try and convince some people i know who tend to national to do the survey and then compare where they are with where the parties are. may make them think a bit ha.
