Slipknot drummer voted best in 20 years

Postby FC » Mon Aug 30, 2010 10:52 am

Jordison is noted for simultaneously playing two bass drums

Joey Jordison, who plays with masked metal band Slipknot, has topped a vote on the best drummers of the past 25 years.

Jordison beat off competition from Nirvana and Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl and Phil Collins to win the poll for UK magazine Rhythm.

The 35-year-old is strapped into his seat during live shows as he performs on a spinning stage which tips to a 90-degree angle.

He said he was "at a loss for words".

"This is beyond unbelievable. Something like this reminds me every day why I continue to do this," he added.

Second on the poll, which drew 100,000 votes, was Mike Portnoy of US prog-metal band Dream Theater and third spot was Gavin Harrison of Hemel Hempstead rockers Porcupine Tree.

Rush's Neil Peart came fourth in the vote with Foo Fighters' Grohl, a former member of seminal grunge band Nirvana and drummer for Them Crooked Vultures, rounding out the top five.

Former Genesis drummer Phil Collins made the top ten, coming in at number nine with around 0.3% of the vote.

Editor of Rhythm magazine Chris Barnes praised Jordison's "mind-blowing technicality and ability to bolster any project with his unique sound and style".

Yeah, but he's hardly "the best" of the last 20 years. "Most popular" perhaps...

yeh, you could say hes the best in a certain area if you narrowly defined the parameters... i dunno, maybe only people with triple platinum sales were considered?

I can beat off really fast but that doesn't mean that watching me do so would be anything other than an ugly and pointless spectacle both degrading to myself and anyone else bored, empty or sick enough to watch.

The fact is that you think that playing fast equals the best. The fact is that the matter is not as black and white as you would have us see it, and so the fact is that you are full of shit.

And as you already pointed out, you can't argue with facts.

If he thinks fast is always best, he's either a virgin or there's a string of born again lesbians behind him.

Theres other factors as well of course that act as tie breakers in those situations such as how clean and accurate he can play at top speed to be judged by trained ears and if still equal then it would come down to stamina.

Good thing to know music, like all art, can be measured so objectively. I'd hate for it to come down to who can provide an emotional response or communicate a message using only the eloquence of music.

Anyone with even a passing interest in drumming knows that the best in the world is a completely ridiculous notion given that it is a title that would have to be shared by a number of mind blowing dudes who play completely different styles. And besides, everyone I have ever seen who is genuinely next level amazing is off making fuck loads of money touring and doing session work for pop and rock stars. Joey Jordison is a fucking one dimensional hack with a terrible drum sound and plays in utterly shit bands loved by 14 year old boys.

How could you compare music to art? it's purely a quest to dominate your instrument of choice

Gabe Serbian is faster than Joey Jordison, and cooler, and in a better band.

artistic value can't be objectively quantified and compared so is pointless
