The Pixies have cancelled their upcoming trip to Israel in light of the controversial raid on a flotilla bound for Gaza last week. The band made this statement:

The decision was not reached easily. We all know well the Israeli fans have been waiting for this visit for far too long. We'd like to extend our deepest apologies to the fans but events beyond all our control have conspired against us.

Producer Shuki Weiss took a contrary position describing the cancellation as "cultural terror against the State of Israel."

Earlier on....

Team Leader of Flotilla
" Ok, so we are going to pack our boat full of food and crap for Gaza, and try to get past the military who have a blockade in place. If they try to board our little flotilla, start kicking them and maybe they will piss off."

Crew member
"Are you sure we shouldnt be armed as well in case they fire at us? They did say a military blockade is in place?"

Team Leader of Flotilla
"No, we need to remain peaceful."

Crew member
"But howcome you told us to kick the soldiers if they come onto our flotilla?"

Team Leader of Flotilla
"purely a gesture"

Crew member
"So what if they open fire on us?"

Team Leader of Flotilla
"Some of us will die dipshit. Its the risk we are all taking"

the report from the human rights council investigation on this has been released. ... .21_en.pdf

documents the breaches of international law and the geneva convention committed by the idf and calls for prosecutions. also documents the breaches of international humanitarian and human rights law that occurred after the flotilla raid; the torture, abuse and beatings suffered by the detainees at the hands of the idf.

they found the israeli blockade to be unlawful and cannot be legally maintained therefore making the actions of the idf entirely unlawful. the report describes the blockade as collective punishment on the palestinian people.

this paragraph is quoted directly from the conclusion:
The conduct of the Israeli military and other personnel towards the flotilla passengers was not only disproportionate to the occasion but demonstrated levels of totally unnecessary and incredible violence. It betrayed an unacceptable level of brutality. Such conduct cannot be justified or condoned on security or any other grounds. It constituted grave violations of human rights law and international humanitarian law.

as is this
The Mission considers that several violations and offences have been committed. It is not satisfied that, in the time available, it can say that it has been able to compile a comprehensive list of all offences. However, there is clear evidence to support prosecutions of the following crimes within the terms of article 147 of the Fourth Geneva Convention:
• wilful killing;
• torture or inhuman treatment;
• wilfully causing great suffering or serious injury to body or health.
The Mission also considers that a series of violations of Israel’s obligations under international human rights law have taken place, including:
• right to life (article 6, ICCPR);
• torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment (article 7, ICCPR; CAT);
• right to liberty and security of the person and freedom from arbitrary arrest or detention (article 9, ICCPR);
• right of detainees to be treated with humanity and respect for the inherent dignity of the human person (article 10, ICCPR);
• freedom of expression (article 19, ICCPR).
The right to an effective remedy should be guaranteed to all victims. The mission must not be understood to be saying that this is a comprehensive list by any means.

it also notes the complete lack of cooperation on the part of the israeli authorities, noting though that this is consistent with any time the idf is investigated. it notes that when people on the flotilla tried to identify individuals who raided them they were met with force.

they also note that the seizure of the goods on board the flotilla was illegal and that the israelis continue to hold all the goods seized which is an on going offence.

and a last quote from the report:
Peace and respect have to be earned not bludgeoned out of any opponent. An unfair victory has never been known to bring lasting peace.
We must secure the extinction of all people and no future for any children
