Jumbo leaves the circus amid welfare concerns

Postby EuphoricMilk » Mon Nov 23, 2009 10:43 pm

The retirement of circus elephant Jumbo is being hailed as a victory by animal rights group Save Animals From Exploitation (Safe).

Jumbo, New Zealand's only African elephant, spent 28 years with the Weber Bros Circus before a decision last week to put her into retirement.

Weber Bros owner Harry Weber told The Dominion Post newspaper a group of specialists met in Auckland last week to discuss 36-year-old Jumbo's future.

Jumbo now belonged to the SPCA, and she had been temporarily rehomed at Franklin Zoo in Tuakau, south Auckland.

SPCA chief executive Robyn Kippenberger said plans were being made to raise money to send Jumbo to a United States elephant sanctuary, which could cost more than $100,000.

There was only one other elephant in the country, an Indian elephant, at Auckland Zoo.

Safe campaign director Hans Kriek said the organisation was thrilled Jumbo was on her way to becoming a free elephant.

Safe had campaigned for 25 years to free Jumbo and other circus animals.

Kriek said Jumbo had been deprived of the company of her own kind for almost her entire life.

If she went overseas, she would have the opportunity to be relocated and socialise with other elephants.

Fuck, about time. I remember when I was in primary school this circus set up in the field, the field of a fucking primary school. She was left in a in a trailer, with fuck all supervision, kids would yell at her, throw rubbish and stones and generally just try to freak her the fuck out. Careless fucking cunts.

Edit: Better article

that article is pretty biased towards safe.. the one in the herald sounds like safe had nothing to do with it. weirdly enough the article in the actual paper is a bit different from the one on the website

my mate has a photo of that elephant trying to attack him(yeh i know, but its real, ive seen it) he used to work for radcliff and he reckons that cunt was a straight callous cruel bastard, and hes hardly down with vegans and animal rights types, which is why he refused to give it to me when i asked if i could make a copy for giving to the same after i was asked for it on here.
the elephant was/is insane and i know when i saw it i was struck by the air/vibe of desolate helpless sadness that emanated from the poor lil bugger.

something i know a christian cannot understand.

I was pretty taken by circuses when I was little- then my Dad took us down to where they were parked up in Tawa. He was still wearing his MAF uniform, and that guy came out and went psycho at him. Dad sent us away to look at the monkeys and this guy tried to have a go at him. Thinking back now I think my Dad was stirring shit cos he hated the state of the circus.
A few years later I saw the elephant lunge at a kid who was hassling it, grab him by the ankle and turn him upside down and drop him on his head. The little bastard probably deserved it, but it was freaky. Still-it could have hurt him, not just scared the shit out of him.
