Wanganui/Whanganui What do ya reckon?

Postby Craig_Bastard » Tue Mar 31, 2009 6:31 pm

What do you think about the H thing in Wanganui/Whanganui?

Personally, I think give it an H, if it was a mistake, then it should be fixed.
Fuck Michael Laws too.

Wanganui is the name of the town, Whanganui is the name of the river. Isn't it?
But yeah, that's how it is, who cares really?

Change it, if only to piss of Michael Laws. Why the hell should conservative Pakeha tell us how we should spell a Maori place-name?

Whuck Wanganui. If it's that much of an issue change the name of the town to H.

Maori had a bunch of different dialects with different phonetics. For instance Tuhoe pronounce "ng" more like "n" and Ngai Tahu pronounce it like "k" (hence Aorangi/Aoraki). In the case of Whanganui, the "wh" is a "w"-with-a-glottal-stop (think someone with a Cockney accent saying "bu'er" for "butter"). The English-speaking settlers couldn't (or didn't want to) pronounce things correctly so they just transliterated it as "Wanganui". Hell, a lot of them still pronounce "Whangarei" as "Wongarei".

Basically, "Wanganui" is wrong. That's why the river, electoral district, national park all use "Whanganui" these days.

It's actually really irritating listening to stick in the mud whiteys pronouncing 'Wongaray', usually quite deliberately as if they're trying to make some sort of point.

'Your views' on this on the herald website today was pretty facepalm. Apparently changing the name is an inappropriate thing to be doing DURING A RECESSION!!!

I'm all for putting the H in wanganui. I've always understood the local moari don't pronounce the H and that putting an h in wanganui doesn't change the pronounciation.
This is what I was taught in school anyway (i grew up in wanganui)

It does say something if like 80% of the locals don't want the name to change though. Doesn't say much for democracy. I mean, if enough of us got together and supported a change to the name of a new zealand town then it would probably happen.

But is it really a name change, or a spelling correction?

I don't see what the big deal is with this. It isn't a name change, it's a spelling correction. Why are the PC brigade up in arms over this?

It's businesses not the PC brigade. They're up in arms due to the changes needed to letterheads.

They're up in arms due to the changes needed to letterheads.

If Bombay can be changed to Mumbai, w(h)anganui pales in comparison
Pre-printed stationery wll continue to be used until depleted and the NZ posties is likely to recognise both for some time.
The recent introduction of the postcode was phased in much the same way.

Michael Laws was dribbling on about how it is an affront to democracy. What a tool. Must have produced a busy day on talkback.

Anything that makes him bleat is all good in my books. Polo neck sporting, eye liner abusing drama queen he is.

I can just see his next column in the Sunday Star Times.

"TO YOU IT'S JUST A LETTER, BUT TO THE PEOPLE OF THIS CITY, THE GEOGRAPHIC BOARD MAY AS WELL HAVE DEFECATED IN THE MOUTHS OF OUR CHILDREN! THIS IS AN ACT OF TERROR!"

Still, it gives the little weasel something to bang on about other than sterilising the underclasses and bringng back the death penalty for a while.

Jesus fuck.

I'd retort that being a clueless huffy dunce who posts on "Your Views" is inappropriate during a recession. Please report to the nearest Soylent Green factory.

Yeah that's the way it is. The point of spelling it Whanganui is to indicate that it can be pronounced both ways. Some who aren't local do pronounce it differently, because "wanga" doesn't make sense to them (unless they're talking about what they're gonna chuck up your pussey).
