Solid Energy invites entire country to AGM

*4:00AM* Thursday Nov 13, 2008
By Grant Bradley
<http://www.nzherald.co.nz/grant-bradley/news/headlines.cfm?a_id=351>

NZ Herald
State-owned enterprise Solid Energy is taking the unique step of
inviting shareholders - theoretically 4.3 million New Zealanders - to a
public annual meeting.

It is the first of its kind for an SOE and invitations are going out to
the energy sector and the meeting in Auckland on Monday, November 24,
will be advertised in newspapers from next week.

SOEs have been criticised for not opening themselves up to the same
scrutiny as listed companies, even though they are wholly owned by
taxpayers. Solid Energy has also been attacked by environmental groups.

The company's chairman, John Palmer, says in the invitation there had
been heightened interest in energy companies this year. "We believe it
is appropriate to give all our stakeholders the opportunity to hear more
about our business performance, future growth, diversification plans and
how we are discharging our corporate social responsibility."

The company recovered from a disastrous first half to notch up an
after-tax profit of $34.4 million for the 2007/08 financial year, well
down on last year's record $96.4 million.

It has had a sometimes testy relationship with the outgoing Labour-led
Government but is likely to be more favourably looked on by the new
administration.

A Solid Energy spokeswoman said the post-election timing of the meeting
was coincidental.

It would have preferred to have had it around the time its annual report
was released in mid-October but there was "too much going on" at the time.

Asked about the threat of disruption from environmental activists she
said anyone would be welcome.

Palmer and chief executive Don Elder will make speeches and then take
questions.

Murray Wright, executive director of the Crown Company Monitoring
Advisory Unit, said the initiative was Solid Energy's, not the result of
any policy shift. "Whether others follow remains to be seen."

Solid Energy says it will provide light refreshments following the
meeting. The spokeswoman said it would have to "take a punt" on the
catering.

Pie in the eye for Solid Energy boss

KRIS HALL - The Dominion Post | Tuesday, 25 November 2008

Image
NEAR MISS: Don Elder, chief executive of state-owned enterprise Solid Energy, manages to deflect a pie aimed at him by one of three Santa-costumed protesters at the company's annual general meeting.

Solid Energy boss Don Elder will be hoping the real Santa Claus delivers better gifts when he comes calling in a month.

Environmentalists attempting to highlight the plight of giant snails gatecrashed the Crown-owned coalmining company's first public meeting, throwing a custard pie at Mr Elder.

The annual meeting in Auckland yesterday was billed as the first of its kind for a state-owned enterprise. It was a move to deflect some of the flak the sector has fielded for not opening itself up to the same level of scrutiny as privately listed companies.

Instead, it turned briefly to custard when pranksters dressed as Santa stormed the stage at the Langham Hotel in a stunt aimed at highlighting green issues.

"Don Elder has been a very naughty boy again this year," bellowed a trio of Save Happy Valley Coalition protesters. "He's not getting any presents from me this year, just dirty, carbon-emitting coal, which unfortunately he has far too much of already."

They then threw the pie and tried to pour coal over him. Mr Elder, however, took it all in his stride. "They tried to chuck a great big cream pie in my face from point blank range and didn't succeed," he said.

"I knocked their arm and they missed and they tried to pour coal over me, but I managed to grab the bag out of their hands."

For a few moments, the meeting descended into chaos as the group wrestled with security. Eventually the protesters were dragged kicking and screaming from the venue....

also:

Protestors have stormed a meeting of New Zealand state-owned coal miner, Solid Energy, attempting to throw a cream pie at chief executive, Don Elder.

The New Zealand Herald reports demonstrators known as the Save Happy Valley Coalition are angry about the mining firm's activities in Happy Valley on the South Island.

They say the company plans to turn wilderness in the area into an open cast coal mine, which could kill endangered species.

Don Elder says the protestors attempted to throw a cream pie at him, and then tried to pour coal on him.

He says the group had been invited to the annual meeting.

actually aidan, as much as those hippies are pieces of shit, people should care, as solid energy is out to do more harm to this country than just some irreplaceable and nearly extinct tree snails.
since the coal is shipped overseas (the coal we burn is of an inferior quality and is imported) our country doesnt benefit in any meaningful way from the exploitation of a natural and finite resource by a private company.
also it isnt just snails getting stomped on, its small business owners and farmers whose livelihoods stand in the way of the massive profits people such as don elder see as their right, even at the expense of innocent people, or innocent molluscs as it happens.
hippies might pigheadedly keep on making their cause look stupid, but the truth is that solid energy should be stopped if anyone gave a damn about anything other than themselves.

oh well.

When the Nazis came for the communists,
I remained silent;
I was not a communist.

When they locked up the social democrats,
I remained silent;
I was not a social democrat.

When they came for the trade unionists,
I did not speak out;
I was not a trade unionist.

When they came for the Jews,
I remained silent;
I was not a Jew.

When they came for me,
there was no one left to speak out.

its Mainly Kiwi that live in the area that is the worry, also rare species like the south island Robin, and heaps of others (Happy Valley is home to great spotted kiwi (roa), kaka, kakariki, and western weka, all of which are threatened species. New Zealand falcon, kea, kereru and long-tailed cuckoo have also been seen in the area, and are expected to live in the area on a seasonal basis.
The water channels of the proposed mine area are inhabitated by a large number of koura (freshwater crayfish).)

Great spotted kiwi have a “gradual decline” threat classification, with the rates of decline being higher in dry habitats than in wet ones.

Great Spotted Kiwi
The major threat to the survival of great spotted kiwi on the mainland is believed to be predation of chicks/juveniles by stoats.

Kiwi are territorial animals, defending their homes vigorously. Possession of territory appears to be an essential requirement for breeding, pair-bond maintenance, and survival.

Surveys show that the 2,932 Mining Permit area in the upper Waimangaroa Valley probably contains 75 to 145 adult great spotted kiwi.

About ten great spotted kiwi live on the proposed mine site. The mixture of forest, tussock and shrublands, as well as the fact that stoats don’t do well in high rainfall areas, means that the area makes a particularly good kiwi habitat.

Also opencast strip mining in a sub alpine wetland..... good one 'carbon neutral' and 'clean and green' '100% pure' NZ....

But if Trevor Mallrd says it is doable....

However, hippies will never, ever, be the solution.

In comedy, we call this person the "straight man" - an archetypal comic foil whose seriousness, obliviousness or both conflicts with one or more other characters to comic effect.

Haha! Fair enough I guess. Still, you can't deny the fail. And no need to take it so personally, are you friends with them or something? They did really epicly fail to pie. Still made the papers though :D

My friend was working for a catering company and that bald guy who dodged a pie was at a function he was waiting at. And the bald guy was apparently telling war stories about the pie incident to people around him. And he said "Yeah it was a tough situation. I mean, on the one hand I couldn't let them hit me with a pie. But on the other hand I didn't want to break her arm." Hahaha! What a douche
