So, how much do you earn?

Former Telecom chief executive Theresa Gattung received a total of $5.4 million during her final year with the company. It included a base salary of $1.25m, performance incentives of $1.52m, long-term incentives of $550,000, the $1.8m in special payments and $287,000 in unpaid annual leave. Gattung had a pay packet of $2.9 million in 2006. The company's 2007 annual report showed Gattung received $1.8m in "special payments" when she left the company in June. Of this, $1.25m was paid when she left the company with an additional $550,000 for what Telecom said was a change in her "restraint of trade" agreement.

In other cases, chief executives have left other firms with the equivalent of a year and sometimes two years extra pay, depending on the term of the contract still to run. Former Brierley Investments chief executive Paul Collins got $4m when he resigned in 1998, Gary Toomey got $4.2m after just nine months as chief executive of Air New Zealand. In 2001, James Boonzaier got about $2m when he was forced out of Tower Corporation in 2002 and Craig Norgate got $1.5m when his two-year contract as chief executive of Fonterra was not renewed.

They say music is the food of love,
Let's see if you are hungry enough,
Take a bite, take another, just like a good boy would,
Get a sweet thing on the side,
Home cooking, homicide,
Side order, could be your daughter,
Fingerlicking good

[Chorus:]
Come on baby, eat the rich,
Put the bite on the son of a bitch,
Don't mess around, don't give me no switch,
C'mon baby eat the rich
C'mon baby eat the rich

Sittin' here in a restaurant,
Tell the waiter just what you want
Is that the meat, you wanted to eat,
How would you ever know?
Hash browns an' bacon strips,
I love the way that you lick your lips,
No fooling, I can see you drooling,
Feel the hunger grow

[Chorus]

Eat up, eat you, eat me,
Eat two, get one free
Shetland pony, extra pepperoni
Just pick up the phone,
Eat greek, or eat chinese,
Eat salad, or scarf up grease
You're on the shelf, maybe eat yourself,
Come on, bite my bone

[Chorus]

Uh oh it's not anymore. Bye-bye Teresa.

to be contrasted with...
http://www.nzherald.co.nz/topic/story.c ... d=10465165

Telecom technicians, who earn less than 1 per cent of their new boss Paul Reynolds' $5.5 million annual package, are seeking their first pay rise in nine years. The technicians at Auckland's Airedale St telephone exchange earn from $36,000 to $50,000 a year to manage the city's phone installations and repairs. They have not had a pay increase since their last collective agreement was negotiated in 1998. Union delegate Jayantilal Parbhu-Jaga, 47, who earns $43,000 a year after 20 years with the company, says Telecom has refused to renegotiate the agreement ever since then. Colleague Stephen Smith, 51, earns $42,000 after 32 years with the company.

When my pay went up from $11.25 to $11.45 an hour, I almost wasn't sure what I was going to do with all that extra cash. Some people said I was just going to blow it on booze and stippers, but I decied to put it into my retirement fund. For the future.

$30 an hour is fuck all if you bother to put any effort into earning some money... it's basically the end result of me paying a little attention at school, and not spending all my free time drinking myself stupid and complaining that not enough is done to make my life easy.

He's right especially for the area he works in. $30 an hour is fuck all. I was making $60 an hour a few years back and I wasn't working in IT.

$20 an hour is ~$40k a year at 40 hours per week... and if I wasn't earning that within 1 year of starting in 'IT' I'd be wondering what the hell was wrong with me.

You couldn't get me out of bed for $20 an hour - even at $30 an hour you don't get me paying attention, but I'll turn up.

Your average "qualified" roadworker gets more than that, leading hands and foremen get plenty more again. They are probably the people that need to be paid decently to keep everything running too...
I think it's lint.

In conservation you make about $14.50 an hour. Most of those people have post-grad degrees and are experienced. If you're lucky you get fed and accomadated as well, but often you pay rent and food. And that's doing fairly specialised stuff like working around helicopters and falling off small boats to do science in remote places. Doing the same stuff for a regional council you make over twice as much. shocking really. And they wonder why they can't get anyone to stay more than a few years...

If you dont mind me asking, what do you do? software engineer or project management or something?

I'm weighing up now whether I should do postgrad so I can do algorithm/AI stuff, or just work up from programmer after graduation.

90-100k for junior developers and sys admins? no way? I thought it was more like 40k for junior/grad developers.

The formal training for theoretical compsci and on site training for practical stuff is pretty much what I expected. Whether or not it's worth doing postgrad really just depends what kind of market there is for AI or algorithm stuff I guess. The IT media recently has been talking about high demand for AI specialists though.

Cheers for the advice.

Wow those are some nice figures, you guys are pretty lucky to be doing so well. If I get a job in Fontera with my science degree apparently I’m looking at like $16 per hour or something. Sux balls.

Wow, it seems crazy not to take short contracts if you're getting such a high premium.

Apparently high paid area's like finance and medicine are using more AI these days, so if you can find work there no doubt you'd get a nice salary. But yea, chances are the mediocre jobs far outweigh the interesting ones in AI. The most interesting stuff in AI is all done in academia I'd imagine.
