Used to listen to it.
Too much pop-punk, not enough ska/hardcore

You don't happen to be one of the DJ's do you?

It plays way too much hardcore and punk and metal....virtually no ska last time i listened to it.

Funny story...I was talking to this guy at parachute when i was doing my petition:

Guy - "hey do you listen to the underground?"
Me - "I used to, but not for ages. I dont really like the make up of all the music now and the two DJ's dont have anything on Matt Crawley eh, he ruled"
Guy - "oh ok, im one of the DJ's"
Me - "Oh ok then, you should play more ska eh"

Then he signed my petition...talk about awkward, haha.

Isn't it funny how in one post we're all bitching about how NZ radio sucks (which it does) and how we need more underground shows. Now people are bitching that they don't like this particular show...beggers can't be choosers!
If no one listens the show will be taken off the air, so come on and support "the scene"

adian, i agree they dont play much ska, but they quite often play FIF. life fm in general plays supertones and dingees, so that kinda makes those bands kinda mainstream, where the underground is trying to play non mainstream music, but yeah i do agree about the not much ska....is there really a big cXn ska scene thou???????

the only bands i can think of are: Supertones, Insyderz, FIF, Buck, Skatrek (NZ RIP)....???

I dont live in auckland....i should listen to the massey radio reggae show but im lazy.

Also i havent heard any ska last two times ive listened to the underground. There is a reasonable christian ska scene, or at least they could play about 3 songs a show or something, its not that hard.

one day...

I quite like the mixup the underground has, even though I like punk rock and ska the best, the more hardcore I hear the more I like it :)

aidan - i was the one you talked to at parachute. i thought it was quite funny. you're right in saying that we don't play much ska. the main reason is that no one seems to want it any more. for the last couple months all we get requests for is hardcore and emo. that added to the fact that the only decent christian ska bands are five iron and the supertones, and neither of them really play ska any more and we don't see much point. we do play five iron a bit, and i love them. if you listen and want us to play some we will for sure, but for the most part it seems everyone's over it.

and, yeah, whoever said we don't play much hardcore definitely hasn't listened in a while. our most played bands are stretch arm strong, zao, underoath, evergreen terrace, hopesfall and narcissus.

i was going to say more, but i forgot what.

hi.

aidan - yeah, i'm wearing an insyderz shirt at the moment that nate, their drummer, gave me after a bible study at his house (eh monkey?) and, despite the fact that he's a really nice guy, i don't think they're that good. there was some good songs on their first album, but after that it went downhill quick. we have, however, played them quite a bit, and have been giving away their best of cd for the past few weeks.

we've played royal rumble a lot and had rimu on the show three times. we've played ska trek a bit, but cause they broke up last year we moved on and played strategy unknown heaps (and heaps), but they only recorded one song and we played it too much. actually they recorded two more earlier this year, but still haven't gotten them to me (ken!).

the israelites are good, but we don't have any of their music. we always get complaints when we play the frugals cause they're so pop. the w's broke up two years ago, and weren't really ever that ska. and buck and bob were cheese pop ska that we'd never play anyway. buck did have a couple good songs, but that album's really old now.

that really didn't come out right. i pretty much just ripped on every band you mentioned. i don't know, if we could play less than jake, reel big fish and buck o nine then we'd probably play more ska, but the christian versions just aren't that good.

if you're into those bands then sweet. i don't want to knock you for it.

okay, i'm going to stop digging now.

yeah, you're right, there are more. it's just unfortunate most of them were bandwagon jumpers who rode ska's late nineties wave of popularity, only surviving because there were the precious few and christians were too scared to listen to the secular alternatives. now that ska has lost it's popularity they've vanished just as quick.

out of that list of eight, five are broken up.
