Netflix NZ

Postby snuff » Sat Mar 07, 2015 4:20 pm

NZ is finally stepping into the new minellyum eh! Not sure what your content or pricing is gonna be like? It's funny how they talk about how you offer an alternative and it will stop people pirating and its pretty true. Having had Netflix as well as some other streaming services for the last four years I can say I don't download fuck all anymore.

So who is planning on signing up?

So true. If you'd told me a few years ago that I would be buying video games I would have laughed in your face.
But making your service affordable + super convenient is a killer combo.

How expensive is it?

It's launching in Aus at the same time, all rumours indicate that it will be $9.99/month. Probably still use my media pc for it although 10TB of storage is going to be redundant. There's certain things that already have licensing agreements ie, Foxtel has exclusive on Game of Thrones and a local streaming service called Stan is already streaming Better Call Saul, so don't know if/when Netflix will be able to stream that content. Still keen for shows from other streaming services that may or may not come here, The Man in the High Castle on Amazon Prime and Community on Yahoo Screen, that being said Netflix will probably reduce my home viewing piracy from 100% to about 10%, my ISP has announced free traffic for it too, so if I was really hard up I could reduce my plan from 300gb to 100gb and save $10 there.

Yeah it's the same for the content in North America too, so in the case of GoT that's on HBO Go. That's how the different companies attract their customers. We have so many options though it's getting ridiculous - Netflix, Shomi, Amazon Prime, Hulu+. Thankfully I have free cable so things like HBO, AMC etc don't really warrant getting too many services, except for sports so I have NBA league pass and NHL center ice.

Like Dave said too it's all about the OC these days which is why Amazon pushed out a bunch of pilots recently.

The beauty of Netflix too is having their apps on everything, I can be watching something on the PS4 in the lounge, go take a shit and instantly have it kick off in the exact spot I was in on my phone, decide to go to bed and keep going on the tablet. Dropping entire seasons on day one is so great as well. Pretty good for $7 a month.

yeah, i pay for netflix and hulu+ so don't really download fuck all anymore either. as said above, if you told me i'd be doing that a couple of years ago i would've laughed in your face.

all i really download anymore are the hbo shows 'cause hbo go has always been a service only available to their cable subscribers but as of this month they're opening it up to anyone so honestly can see myself dropping my hulu+ sub and picking up hbo go.

internet in nz is amazing now, too. am paying $99 p/m for unlimited 100d/30u which is insane.

This.

I used to do 500gb - 1TB a month without even thinking.I have no qualms with paying a premium for speed over quantity these days.

Man the Stuff comments crack me up, it seems every week they're posting a story about how to circumvent North American services cue 50 peoples going torrents, vpn, shitty streaming sites. Fucking peasants.

Yeah sickbeard and couchpotato are a sweet combo, I only get 640kb/s download speed on newsgroups so unless Netflix has some pretty sweet compression or I get a lot better speed having content on my ISPs server its probably not going to work for me. Still give a free trial a whirl though.

The thing that makes Netflix so good imo is the recommendation algorithm - it's like when you start reading an article on wikipedia and then link to something interesting, to something else all of a sudden a couple hours have passed.

mmmm....good crack wrote:Whats wrong with vpn if you can't use it another way?

It's not so much the vpn that annoys me, more the sense of entitlement.

Oh that wasn't a comment directed at deez, more at the comments on stuff (no surprise really). It's like if something isn't avail day one in 4k people lose their minds lol.

But yeah, on the subject of global mode it's a bit of a dick move on the isp's behalf. As a content creator shouldn't I be able to determine when and how my content is released?

It's interesting HBO is dropping GoT at the same time worldwide this upcoming season, think that means sometime around noon in NZ.

And I'm sure there's plenty of folks living in Africa who would love to have refrigerators and other such things... Kiwis shouldn't expect all these first world luxuries - especially if you're not willing to fully commit to the war on terror.

It's like watching the birth of a National voter live.

"Now that I'm ok, too fucking bad for everyone else. I can't understand why you would do something ILLEGAL just to have a basic service I take for granted, that I did when I couldn't access it. Jesus, just bootstrap yourself into living in a different country, pleb"

"There are people who are in a worse situation then you so you should just accept your shitty life. If you are not literally in the worst possible circumstances you should not even think about your quality of life improving. That's why I love buying conflict diamonds, makes sure there are lives shitty enough for me to keep this stupid logical fallacy in my pocket like a fucking asshole"

"Literal quote from industry executives, speaking on behalf of content creators with no idea what they actually want, after decades of literally raping them anally so I can upgrade my maserati every year, drown in cocaine and hookers, and buy enough viagra to stop the coke dick making the whores a waste of time"

It's only the old guard left, if we can't antagonise each other for shits and giggles what's the point?

In all seriousness though, def try out the free one month trial when it's available. Sure there's plenty of direct to DVD filler but it's totally worth it for being able to pull up 9 seasons of the X-files and picking all your fav eps to watch.
