caroline in the city (unwelcome 90's TV nostalgia thread)

Postby Philfy Vermin » Thu May 09, 2013 9:37 am

a 90's sitcom i thought i could remember enjoying, i got about 3 mins into the pilot before i had to shut it off.
at first i thought it was the canned laughter, i had the same problem watching seinfeld, and i wondered if i could find a version sans the laugh track, but then i realised that the jokes were shit, and none of it really seemed familiar except lea thompson(she was martys girlfriend in back to the future, she also played his mum, but lets not think about that)so i figured i probably never liked it in the first place, and i just remembered it cos i watched a lot of TV back then.

always surprises me how retarded people dressed in the 90's... surely it wasnt that long ago.

anyway, its made me reconsider downloading newsradio, in case it turns out i dont like that either, tho im more sure i was into it at the time, after all, it starred troy mclure(15th anniversary of his brutal murder).

probably gunna get it anyway.

yup.

Christ, what is this, Remind Twoshoes of Crappy Shows She Successfully Repressed Week? My ex brought up that shitty 'Early Edition' show, where a cat delivered a future telling newspaper to some dork every morning, and then some other cunt brought up that show 'Wings', which was also *arrrrgh, shit*

90s tv actually sux0rs, and lives on as a constant reminder as to why we never had tvs in our houses for that decade.

And nah, Caroline in the City wasn't Marty's gf, she only tried to put the moves on him before finding her density. Jennifer was played by... *looks up*... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Claudia_Wells

oh right, she only played his mum... weird how i remembered that wrong. :/

and haha, early edition, fuck yeh, i remember that shit, it made such little sense, but it was a nice surrealist fantasy concept, would have made a better movie than a series, the actor was the same guy from office space.

All I remember of him is... Eyebrows? Apparently Fisher Stevens was in it too (whom I had also successfully repressed the memory of, gods damn :( ).

And Lorraine/Jennifer did look pretty similar.

apparently lea thompson did shoot some scenes as jennifer, with another actor eric stoltz, playing marty, some of those early scenes that didnt feature stoltz were used, but i doubt the scenes i remember are real, just imagined, but fuck me i could swear i remember her being martys missus.

At the time I thought Men Behaving Badly was the best thing ever. Didn't know it was based on a British series. Probably sucks actually.

Not quite 90s, but my uncle voiced his appreciation for the lack of a laugh track in Malcolm in the Middle, and then proceeded to perform his own. :baton:

I remember enjoying that. Though I must have been 9 or 10 at the time so obviously had no idea. Also: The Pretender.

My brother liked it, I thought it was lame as. The main actor was on tv in something else the other day. Best 90s shit was stuff like step by step, family matters, full house...

I enjoyed early edition. Loved pretender.

There's way too many TV shows from the 90's that I think I thought I liked to even know where to begin. The combination of being 90's TV and the fact I was a kid at the time really reduces the likelihood that any of it was actually remotely watchable.

And hush your mouth about the Bundys, technically that was 80s. Well, started in the 80s anyways. I love that show, it's still funny as fuck.

Edit, I hated The Pretender too, we used to have a nickname for him, but can't rember it off-hand. Hmmn... Another show just popped into my mind, was on real late at night, had a pony tailed cunt in a Hawaii shirt, and a little blonde gapped toothed dude sidekick, solving crime in fucking Miami or some shit?

Also, ahahaha ha, Martin, he's the man.

Yeah, haven't seen Office Space, but that's Ron Livingstone, a.k.a Major Nixon on Band of Brothers. The Early Edition guy has the same brows, but far squintier eyes (that pic ain't loading for me for some reason, this is my memory telling me this).

And aaaargh, Dawson's Creek! Fuck that shit in the *face*!

fuck theres some awful opinions in here, especially you diesel, you should be ashamed.

at the time i used to like the critic better than duckman, watching it now the critic is a bit shit, but duckman is even better really, the whole surrealist film noir style is fucking awesome, sure the jokes are a bit tired, but i happen to appreciate jason alexander, and it is from the 90's, so you gotta give it a break, it helps to remember its made by the same team as rugrats, and has a (slightly) more adult version of the same humour.
id recommend giving that episode i posted a spin, tho the storyline is bollocks and it just peters out to a super lame feel-good ending, its a pretty good example of a buzzay as episode for at least the first third.

speaking of sweet cartoons from the 90's i got all of daria, which altho i love it, i wouldnt try to make anyone else watch, haha.
all of aeon flux, which is still fantastic, and has aged brilliantly, tho some of the ideas about a dystopian future a bit out of date, but all good. (never saw the movie, never gunna if i can help it)
all of spawn, which is still pretty epic, but much slower paced than i remember, i used to get stoned and watch this with all the curtains shut when i came home from my horticulture course when i was 16. nowadays the overt christian good/evil theme pisses me off. (i did see the movie of this, wasnt very good).
im sure i dont need to remind anyone how amazing gargoyles was, if youve watched any cartoons lately and thought 'im sure they were better when i was a kid' well if gargoyles was one of those cartoons, you were right, they were.

p.s. miss twoshoes, i was disturbed and offended to hear that you had not seen office space, i suggest you remedy this situation forthwith, and make sure you enjoy it.

Duckman was great. Couldn't find the episode where we find out that Cornfed used to be the bass player in Flock of Seagulls but this one is good.
