haha yeah I thought the same, at the very least, Cliff

Hollywood gets Maoris to play any dark skinned race, and then get an Indian to play a Maori...

It fucking better not suck.

But I also kind of don't want Orson Scott Card to make any money because he's a colossal asshole.

On the surface, at least. If you think about them too much the cockbaggery shines through. Depending what ones you pick up, of course. Apparently "Homecoming" is just the Book of Mormon in space, while his political thrillers are the worst of the lot. I had read through most the Ender/Bean books and Alvin Maker and enjoyed them well enough. Then I picked up Empire. At this stage I had never really done any background on Card as an author. At first I thought it was just good characterisation - of course the Army Guys are going to think like that - but soon it became apparent that he was just spouting out his batshit crazy views left, right, and centre. A quick peek at Wikipedia confirmed this. Fortunately the book got to the stage that it was so bad it was good. The crazy liberals who hate America managed to somehow take control of New York City with giant Mechs that they had secretly built in their spare time and the heroes have to break through the cordon and get to the Fox News HQ because they are the only news outlet with any integrity at all. Or something. Worth a laugh, anyway.

Didn't I say that this was a bad idea? Why didn't you cunts cast a Maori actor to play a fucking Maori character?
Image
Yuck.

Hell: shoulda just got Tama Iti to do it. He is an actor now, too, right? And at least his Moko doesn't look shit.

What a shame, I like him as an actor, but that looks dogshit. I can only dread what other abominations they'll make of this sweet, sweet book. Never liked Sci-fi before reading this eh.

Yeah, my only gripe with The Cloud Atlas had a Moriori character called Atua, who was African American with vaguely Polynesian tattoos and a bad pidgen maybe Caribbean accent. Also the Chatham Islands looked alot like Hawaii.

New trailer. Looks pretty damn sweet - I think I can appreciate Ford as Graff. Mazer still isn't Maori though. Nice try on the accent but... no. How fucking hard would it have been to pick up the phone and ring Cliff? This will ruin it for me, I know it.

Yeah the trailer actually has me less skeptical, really hoping they don't fuck this up.

This poster cracks me up... Not a game? Well then what the fuck...

Agreed, and in the trailer Ender is obviously giving the final command to blow up the Formic's homeworld. But I don't think that will be as spoilery for those not in the know as it is for us. Though, granted, destroying an entire planet is generally a pretty big deal.

Will be interesting to see if it is actually an action movie, or if they've just picked those scenes for the trailer. Will be weird if it is, considering the majority of the story is about kids at school (in space).

You're welcome, Pert!

According to sources I can't remember, the movie does away with the original twist anyway, so the trailer isn't a spoiler. Can't imagine what they'd replace the sick-twist-which-I-totally-called-when-I-was-reading-the-book-please-tell-me-i'm-smart with though. Danger of ending up as fucking pedestrian fight movie. Harry Potter in Space!

Fuck it I'm still going to love it

I didn't so much call the twist, as kinda just sort of figured? I dunno, still seems like it would make a fantastic twist in the movie.

I finished the second book (earth afire) in the prequel trilogy, have been enjoying these books, but holy shit - if I have to read about one more super intelligent kid that knows better than the adults around them. Knowing Cards gross background, can't help but wonder if there's something insidious behind this reoccurring theme.

Listened to the audiobook rather than read, which i think tends to make me miss a bunch of stuff. great audio though, Card, Harlan Ellison and some bloody magical woman.

Also kids knowing better than adults/not being listened to/being isolated from adults is a common YA thing. Kids want to read about kid heroes and heroes have to be the best at things. Plus it's a somewhat common trope to have the fate of the world rest on a child's shoulders.

That good to hear buddy, I'm good too - Lucy and I have been keeping pretty low key in Roskill South, saving for a house and all that. I haven't read Foundation - just checked it out in Wiki, looks nerd as - will check it out after I finish reading my latest book. Currently reading Feed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feed_(Grant_novel)) - story about young journalists in a post-zombiepoc' world...is ok so far.

Verdict: average.

Pacing of the first half seems a bit off. Or goes past too quickly: don't really get an idea of who the other kids are at all past the basics. Likewise with only a couple of battleroom scenes the evolution of Ender's (or Bean's) strategy and how radically different it was from the norm isn't very apparent.

The whole thing is overly melodramatic as well.

Mazer is played by a fucking Indian. His attempt at a cuzzy bro accent almost made me flee the cinema. TEM MORRISON YOU FUCKS. NOT FUCKING ROCKET SCIENCE.

The ending is quite strange too. Finishes on finding the hive queen larvae - can't remember if the book finished that way or not? I would have liked it to be a little bit more depressing actually. Seems to be fairly obviously setting up for the sequel.

He has actually said publicly that he's going to use proceeds from this movie to fund anti-gay campaigns.
