i couldnt get to the end, when i saw i was only halfway i pulled the plug.

the predictability of it was what got to me, im sure id have liked it if i was 9...
wish they could blow a budget like that on a good movie.

Fucking hard. Good thing some retarded white guy came along and showed them how to do it RIGHT.

HOORAH! :explainittomelikeimfive:
But I read Starship Troopers recently, and a lot of the cheesy stereotype stuff ('extreme' female pilot, all the stupid 'grunt' talk) sounded like a direct homage, which makes it kind of better, but that shit wasn't great in Starship Troopers either (talking the book here, the movie is hilarious and totally needs it)

i didnt like starship troopers, just a bunch of jock idiots, faceless enemies designed to portray US soldiers as the good guys and the other side as hordes of inhuman scum... but they arent on another planet, its somebody elses country.

I really hated Heinlein until I recognized his later stuff as satire
The movie, by the way, has little resemblance to the book except for key ideas/ some characters, but I watch it as satire as well, unbearable otherwise : S

edit: although there's always the underlying sense that Heinlein does believe what he's saying, he's just exaggerating it for effect. He really was scared of commies, and if he was just 'exaggerating' his actual opinions then he's a sexist pile of shit as well. But you know, entertainment

According to Paul Voeorehoeven the central message of the film was supposed to be 'war makes fascists of us all'. I thought Starship Troopers was excellent. Half satire, half ridiculous trash filmmaking at its best. I liked it better than the book but, like aerozol said, they're two very different stories.

Loved Starship Troopers, I reckon it's a damn good anti-war movie

Really because I "got" it and I think most people I know did as well. I mean c'mon it's directed by the guy that did Robocop 8)

The insanely massive budgets are mostly a recent phenomenon, so maybe with a bit of time they'll accidentally cough a good one out. I thought Pirates of the Caribbean 3 was awesome, but I'm probably alone in that...

What bugged me about this movie (other than the things already mentioned) is that the Na'vi clearly had very close evolutionary ties to the other animals on the planet (as you would expect) except all the animals had 6 lims and the na've had 4.

Also, really appreciate how this movie rapidly went from "most amazing movie ever" to pretty much never being mentioned ever again.

yep, this bugged me too. I did really like the plants though. When the movie got boring I just tried to figure what actual plant families they had used as inspiration.

Main thing that bugged me is that the human guy is like "I have a brilliant plan" and teaches them this new and revolutionary tactic of all grouping together and flying right at the enemy.
This proceeds to get pretty much everyone (except for the baddies) reeeaaaallly fucked up aka dead, until he has the big "oh I fluked it and saved everyone" moment and then everyone is like "yeeeeaaahh what a cool guy". I would have punched him in the fucking teeth

Sorry little rant there :S

Nah, fair enough. That whole chunk of the plot is completely wack.

i once read a pretty cool scifi about a planet that had evolved 6 limb mammals, and when humans discovered a portal or whatever, suddenly there were pegasuses(pegasi?) and 4 armed dudes rocking about, it was a much better story than avatar, but then so was hairy maclairy.

also, ive asked this on here before, and it caused a retarded argument, but can anyone remember what a unicorn crossed with a pegasus is called?

According to wikipedia, an alicorn, or just winged unicorn.

Never seen Avatar, don't think I'll ever bother, pretty stoked about it.
