Nightmare on Elm Street remake WTF

Postby Phlegm » Thu Feb 12, 2009 2:50 pm

BILLY BOB THORNTON will star as FREDDY KRUEGER in a new NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET movie.
The 53-year-old actor will take on the chilling role in a remake of the 1984 original.
Robert Englund, who played the part in eight films, revealed that Thornton will star in the horror films and is an "excellent choice" for the role.
He adds, "A big budget should mean the film will look a lot better than some of the old movies."

The Billy Bob thing was a fake rumour, but as far as I know, things are still moving forward on a remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street.

It is a bit of a shame - I don't remakes of stuff like Friday the 13th, My Bloody Valentine, Amityville Horror, etc because the originals were shit...but A Nightmare on Elm Street is a fuckin' sweet movie (dorky Carrie-esque trick ending aside).

It seems nostalgia is HUGE money, hence these remakes and big movies based on childrens' toys.

Remakes are shit at the best of times, but it's hardly the worst idea / casting decision ever, if Billy is actually doing it.

No need to act like Austin Kutcher is playing Freddy or someone else equally shit.

I think remakes are fine, if they are being made for reasons to bring something new to the table. Cronenberg's The Fly, Kurosawa's Seance, Carpenter's The Thing, etc etc are all good examples.

But the currently Hollywood trend is an extension of the feeling that people pay for familiar BRAND NAMES. So they'll watch a movie based on a toy designed for 7-year-olds, they'll watch a fourth sequel to a movie they liked, they'll watch a movie made from their favourite book...or they'll watch a new version of a movie they liked 20 years ago/in a different language.

Stuff like remaking The Omen just because they could get a release date of 6/6/06 is pretty soulless filmmaking.

I don't think it matters too much who is playing Krueger - the guy is buried under a mass of latex and only has a handful of lines in the original. (Although they do include his classic first line - "THIS is God.")

I can't imagine Billy Bob being scary. I can only picture him as Bad Santa.

The only recent horror remakes I like are the some of the new zombie flics: Dawn/Day of the Dead. Reckon they actually made a really good job.

bad santa was basically freddy krueger without the murdering, tank top and claws.
