I have been watching a bunch of decent horror films lately

Mama - decent horror about two young girls found after surviving in the wild for 5 years - who has been keeping them alive... this starts off strongly with good scares, but story becomes a little bland
Image

Open Grave - waking up in a pit of dead bodies in the middle of nowhere with a gun and no memory - plot is engaging from start to finish.
Image

Afflicted - two friends embark on their OE while blogging their (mis)adventure - a found-footage horror film that breaks the mould.
Image

Wer - a rare gem among tired werewolf flicks, a strange man is arrested for brutally dismembering a family, the investigation leads to uncanny findings
Image

Hysteria - back in the day when doctors give genital massages in the name of curing hysteria among the women-folk...
Image

As Above So Below - explorers venture to the dark catacombs beneath Paris - a cut above the average horror, original concept but story gets a bit muddled
Image

Chappie - In a chaotic crime-ridden world of robotic police force, an experimental AI robot was created with the ability to develop consciousness
Image

Mad Max: Fury Road - a whole bunch of awesome stuff cobbled together and add post apocalyptic desert chase scene
Image

Captain America - a brave weak man is chosen to be a super soldier during WW2 to fight the evil Nazis...
Image

Captain America: Winter Soldier - the captain is found frozen and brought back to life by SHIELD in the 21st century

The Expendables
Fun enough. I would've thought thought this was really cool when I was 8.
Image

Tazza: The Hidden Card
South Korean gambling film with good doses of humour and playfulness as well as violence and tension. Had a good time watching this one. Quite long, but worth it.
Image

Uzumasa Limelight
Somewhat low-key drama about an overlooked, older samurai drama actor who is befriended by a young, aspiring female actor. Firmly rooted in the traditional entertainment industry of Kyoto, this one is simple, elegant and features beautifully choreographed samurai fight scenes. Loved it.
Image

Gangster Squad
A bit like poor man's L.A. Confidential crossed with poor man's Inglorious Basterds. Pretty light entertainment overall, an action movie more than anything. Sean Penn makes a great bad guy, etc.

Miś a.k.a. Teddy Bear. A comedy about a guy who has to figure out how to obtain another passport in communist Poland, after his ex-wife destroys his. A bit of the amusement was probably lost in subtitle translation, but still hilarious at times. Need to watch it again to pick up all the oddities that mock the state of the country.

Godzilla - lacking quality in acting and script, but still entertaining to see monsters battle and level the city. Way better than the 90s Godzilla film
Image

Suburban Gothic - low budget campy horror - unemployed graduate returns home and begins to experience paranormal activity. Kat Dennings is delightful as always.
Image

Hundred Foot Journey - I'm a sucker for culinary films and this one is delightful. An Indian family moves to French countryside and sets up shop opposite a classy French restaurant.
Image

Comet - shows various conversations and stages in a six-year romance thru good and bad times in a non-chronological order. Artfully filmed and acted. I love Emmy Rossum, who can do no wrong.
Image

Lucy - forced to traffic new synthetic drugs which unlocks mental capacity to do... anything. A pointless and unsatisfactory watch
Image

Pride - story of how a group of gays and lesbians supported the miners' strike in the Thatcher era. A great cast brings this story alive.
Image

The Dark Horse - quintessential NZ film about troubled youth given direction and stability through community and purpose.
Image

To Write Love on Her Arms - story of one's girl journey thru depression, self harm, drugs, hope, support, cold turkey and sharing via social media
Image

To Do List - a high achieving high school girl makes a list of sexual experiences to acquire before going to college
Image

The Visitor - A professor goes to the city for a conference and discovers that his apartment has been rented to foreigners. He lets them stay, takes part in their life and rediscovers his own.
Image

Welcome to the Dollhouse - growing up, being bullied, sibling rivalries and discovering sexuality, all told from a Todd Solondz lens

Doco about modelling scouts exploiting young Siberian girls for modelling work in Japan. There's this 13 year old girl, speaks only a few words of English and no Japanese, and they won't even meet her at the airport... deeply disturbing.

Sicario - Fantastically shot, but ultimately unsatisfying flick from Denis Villeneuve of Prisoners and Enemy fame. Has a few things going for it, but my least favourite of his movies so far. Worth a look, just not much of a script.

The Revenant - I really enjoyed this. Like a gritty reboot of Dead Man. The landscape really does a lot of the work, just breath taking.

The History of Future Folk - The dude plays a mean banjo, but this comedy troupe are just a b-grade Tenacious D/Flight of the Conchords, and this film is fucking boring and not funny. Meh.

The One I Love - This was a surprise stand out, came out last year so it doesn't join my list of 2015 favourites, but totally worth a look. Would not have watched this based on the cover or title, it was recommended in an extremely cryptic review, and the less you know about it the better, though I'll say it's not dissimilar from a series like Black Mirror. Maybe even that is too much information.
I'm not a cool guy anymore.

The Martian

Thought they did a damn good job of adapting the movie from the book, missed out some stuff, but overall real good.

Joy

I think I enjoyed this. Good cast and shot well and stuff. Story was kinda odd in the way it skimmed over stuff that movies would normally dwell on more. The choice of narrator seemed odd and disjointed.

Yeah it was, not as good as Daredevil imo but Kilgrave is certainly one of the best Marvel villains they've put to screen yet. Really looking forward to Luke Cage and Iron Fist, and hopefully come kind of Heroes for Hire team up there.

This was my film of 2015, they shot some of it like 45mins down the road from me - I remember when the extras call went out but I couldn't do it due to visa restrictions :( That scene where Leo encounters two grizz cubs, that happened to me. I was on a mission with my headphones in and came around a corner in the path to two of the fuckers, shat my pants... Ran back and around them and snapped a pic before I could see if their Mum was around ha.

Had the old post-Christmas/New Years movie binge with my lady during the aftermath. A rather pleasant chill time.
Regarding films we watched The Lobster, Ex Machina, Last Night and Crimson Peak. A few nights after I watched
Jurassic World. I found all to be somewhat enjoyable but 'Ex Machina' easily took the first place from those selections.

As for series I had been revisiting Father Ted pre-xmas, Peep Show season 9 and I've just started on Graham Duff's series 'Ideal' which
I'm quite enjoying...it gets extra punk points for including selections from Wire's album 'Send' in episode 3.

Ex Machina

Awesome!
'I Like It When You Die' is the fourth album by American grindcore band Anal Cunt. The album was originally titled You're Gay, and the album cover was going to contain a mirror, but this idea was later changed

Very strange film, the sets and costumes are extravagant, the actors are all weird looking, and the acting is comically over the top theatrical style. Who knew Stalin era filmmakers were so damn camp?

Into the Grizzly Maze - Bit of fun, fairly b grade feeling.

Brooklyn - Really liked this, story about an Irish girl moving to America

The intern - Thought this was going to be some dumb comedy but ended up being pretty good. Robert De Niro is an elderly intern to Anne Hathaway

The Big Short - Story behind 2008 wallstreet crash. Pretty good, good cast. Had kind of a wolf of wallstreet vibe to it without being so ridiculous. Have decided I only hate Steve Carell as a comedy actor.

Everest - Was ok. Kiwi accents were probably convincing to non NZers.

Yeah Pert. Ex Machina was A++.

Ive watched a couple of total cheesers over dinner out of boredom the past few nights.
I watched the second maze runner flick. Scorch trials or whatever....I thought the first one was good and I dig the post-apocalyptic vibes but the plot isnt gripping enough I thought. Some neat action parts and scenescapes though. I gave Tommorowland a go and it was better than Id anticipated...especially for a Disney flick.
The best film I've watched lately would have to be The Visit by M Night Shyamalan. A good thriller with some great twists and unexpected comedy. Cant reccomend that one more. Yih.
