Covers that sound better than the original...
That Negative FX review thread made me think of this. There are definitely a ton of them out there. The one that springs to mind for me right now is Alkaline Trio's cover of Hot Water Music's 'Rooftops'. HWM is my favourite band, but I gotta hand it to A3, they did it better.
What are you fullas' favourite covers done better?

heard Copelands cover of Every Breath You Take recently and I prefer it to the Police version (which I actually like anyway)... it just seems to nail the vibe a little better

I like that cover but I think it only really works in tandem with the crywank-as video
prefer the original either way

yes to both. love that sonic youth track especially.
Sinead O' Connor - Nothing Compares 2 U (Prince)
did he write this for her? or write it for himself, and then she covered it? i was under the impression it was the former..
Rufus Wainwright - Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen)
buckley does a pretty good one too. but seriously, go to hell.. i don't care if it sounds like i'm rabidly defending leonard, the original is the best. then again, i find rufus to be a bit of a wanker. that could have coloured my judgement. which is silly considering the personalities of the rest of the music world.. that said, i can't listen to rufus' for very long at all, but can listen to leonard over and over.
in short, your opinion is wrong.
except for the first three. and the rest of your list is pretty good too..

Big Black-He's a whore, The Model(gasp), and the Big Payback (but probably because it's one of James Brown's weakest songs).

Re: Covers that sound better than the original...
Gipsy Kings' version of Hotel California. Not hard to beat the original really.
Everywhere I went it felt like they were watching me; fish-white flesh puckered by the Highland breeze; tight eyes peering out for fresh meat; screechy, booze-soaked voices hollering out for a taxi to take ‘em halfway up the road to the next all-night watering hole. A shatter of glass; a round of applause; a sixteen-year-old mother of three vomiting in an open sewer, bairns looking on, chewing on potato cakes. I ain’t never going back… not never.
