Covers that sound better than the original...

Postby LegDog » Tue Nov 11, 2008 10:03 pm

That Negative FX review thread made me think of this. There are definitely a ton of them out there. The one that springs to mind for me right now is Alkaline Trio's cover of Hot Water Music's 'Rooftops'. HWM is my favourite band, but I gotta hand it to A3, they did it better.

What are you fullas' favourite covers done better?

heard Copelands cover of Every Breath You Take recently and I prefer it to the Police version (which I actually like anyway)... it just seems to nail the vibe a little better

blasphemy but I like Save Ferris' version of Come On Eileen more

'smoke on the water' by any fourth former with a nylon string acoustic
avril's take on system of a down - 'chop suey'

type o negative did great versions of 'cinnamon girl' and 'summer breeze', and their take on 'hey joe'* was fuckin gr9 too.

* i'd hope it was reasonably common knowledge, for anyone who wasn't otherwise aware jimi hendrix didn't write this song... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hey_Joe

cradle of filth - death comes ripping
mad sin - london dungeon
basically anyone who covered the misfits, does not diminish the awesomeness of the misfits tho

blood for blood - ace of spades
blood for blood - bloodshed
blood for blood - we´re goin´ down the bar.
basically anything blood for blood does, does not diminish the awesomeness of the band they covered tho.

yes to both. love that sonic youth track especially.
Sinead O' Connor - Nothing Compares 2 U (Prince)

did he write this for her? or write it for himself, and then she covered it? i was under the impression it was the former..
Rufus Wainwright - Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen)

buckley does a pretty good one too. but seriously, go to hell.. i don't care if it sounds like i'm rabidly defending leonard, the original is the best. then again, i find rufus to be a bit of a wanker. that could have coloured my judgement. which is silly considering the personalities of the rest of the music world.. that said, i can't listen to rufus' for very long at all, but can listen to leonard over and over.

in short, your opinion is wrong.

except for the first three. and the rest of your list is pretty good too..

Big Black-He's a whore, The Model(gasp), and the Big Payback (but probably because it's one of James Brown's weakest songs).

Gipsy Kings' version of Hotel California. Not hard to beat the original really.
Everywhere I went it felt like they were watching me; fish-white flesh puckered by the Highland breeze; tight eyes peering out for fresh meat; screechy, booze-soaked voices hollering out for a taxi to take ‘em halfway up the road to the next all-night watering hole. A shatter of glass; a round of applause; a sixteen-year-old mother of three vomiting in an open sewer, bairns looking on, chewing on potato cakes. I ain’t never going back… not never.

Queens of the stone age - who'll be next in line (kinks) kinks rule but so does this.

repos - ending on a positive note LP (is a cover of Youth of Todays entire album We're no in this alone) soooo fucking good.
