Phil Collins is #1

Postby BigNanaJez » Thu Jul 24, 2008 11:04 am

Phil Collins is at #1.

A television ad featuring a gorilla playing drums has helped push a Phil Collins song from 1981 to the top of the New Zealand singles charts.

Collins's song In The Air Tonight, from the 1981 album Face Value, has hit the top spot in the New Zealand charts. It has also topped the iTunes video singles charts.

It's resurgance in the charts can be attributed to a popular ad for Cadbury's Dairy Milk chocolate, which started screening in New Zealand on June 23.

If features a stern gorilla playing drums along to the Phil Collins song.

It has been popular worldwide, with more than 2.5 million plays on video sharing site YouTube.

In the Air Tonight pushes Katy Perry's song down to No. 2, and Tiki Taane's Always On My Mind is at No. 3.

A Phil Collins hits album has also re-entered the album charts, with Hits sitting at No. 10.

The album charts are topped by the Mamma Mia movie soundtrack.

Two New Zealand albums are in the albums charts: Tiki Taane's Past, Present, Future, and Flight of the Conchords' debut.

Singles:
1. In the Air Tonight - Phil Collins
2. I Kissed A Girl - Katy Perry
3. Always On My Mind - Tiki Taane
4. Nesian 101 - Nesian Mystik
5. When I Grow Up - The Pussycat Dolls
6. Closer - Ne-Yo
7. Forever - Chris Brown
8. That's Not My Name - The Ting Tings
9. Moving Mountains - Usher
10. Bust It Baby Pt 2 - Plies feat. Ne-Yo

My only gripe of the tv ad is that the drum kit is right-handed. Phil Collins is a lefty.

Nah guys, it's a real gorilla. Seriously, this guy in one of my classes was like "nah, like, I'm a drummer aye, and like, he's hitting heaps of the wrong stuff, so it must be a gorilla."

FACT

My lecturer was also wondering how long it would take to train up the gorilla

That Tiki Taane song made my brain spasm because the main lyric is the same as the coolest song that was on my Chipmunks cassette and upon hearing it I get the Chipmunks song, the original version of the Chipmunks tune and Tiki Taane all clambering around in my head at once. Absolute shambles.

ad wasn't funny the first time, and it gets progressively worse in my humble opinion. ads really get me started though.

This was for Marketing Communications, I'm studying Event Management. I was pretty shocked to hear everyone wondering if it was a real gorilla, and even the teacher wondering how long it took to train it. When I said "What the hell, there's no way they can train a gorilla to do that, it's not real" everyone brushed it to the side and continued to discuss how they got a gorilla to do it.

To be honest I haven't even seen the whole ad, cause the fucking thing doesn't start drumming for about a minute and I got bored pretty quickly

Obviously a real gorilla. Same with King Kong. Ricky Gervais told me.

It's resurgance in the charts can be attributed to a popular ad for Cadbury's Dairy Milk chocolate, which started screening in New Zealand on June 23.

Meanwhile in other news, chocolate sales have remained completely unchanged!

Useless fucking ad.
