This is still quite disturbing, definitely not a fun party song like Pat Travers or George Thorogood say. Blues was all about writing about their own experience and keeping it real.

There's probably a correlation between old age and appreciation of Billie Holiday... only singer who can make me cry. Damn she could sing the phone book and make me cry.

Browsing RYM album charts (all genres) for 1965 at the moment. Liking this find:

My discovery for today is Barbara Dane's album On My Way. A bit of a mixed bag of genres, but there's some bluesy stuff on it:

After finding the slow burners on Jimmy Witherspoon's album Evenin' Blues I've been looking for more 60s albums with a similar mood. Arbee Stidham - Tired of Wandering fits the bill. Not sure if singles could provide such a time:

Good soulful Chicgo blues.

There's something about the "production" on this record that's perfect too, like you easily imagine it being performed in a smoky, dingy bar back in the day.

Really love Elizabeth Cotten too. She's a special one. Not strictly blues, more blues-folk.

It's rockin'... recorded in 1949, candidate for first rock n roll record, predates rocket 88 anyway

RateYourMusic is a great source for seeing what genres people ascribe to various releases. Looks like the first with rock & roll voted as a primary genre is this:

(Roy Brown wrote and recorded a less rocking version of the song first.) Other older releases also have rock & roll voted as a secondary genre, for example:
