giz a bass advice ay
What do kents suggest for a used bass around 4-500 bucks? 4 string, righty, something built tough.
And what's the difference in sound/application between passive and active? Will be using it for rockpunk and metalrock mostly but would be cool to have an all rounder for if I ever need it for other shit like porn groove.
Mexican Fender Jazz would probably be the ticket, but seems they're a bit more than I'm willing to spend at the moment.
What's this thing like?

It has a sound that "really rocks"!

Go for a SX Jazz copy. In your price range, sound good and Nat did a kickflip with his once and it was sweet.
Moral of the story = SX Jazz copy.

Something like this? A bit lower than my budget, not that it's a bad thing.
http://www.trademe.co.nz/music-instrume ... 820761.htm
Need something I can buy locally-ish, keen to inspect before I hand over the cash.
Should also mention, something that I can easily get most of my money back on when I sell it.

You probably won't get a Mexican Fender for that much, but I know someone selling a pretty nice MIM Jazz that he probably wants $700 for.
While I don't really like any active basses I would definately avoid getting a cheap active bass.
Play a bunch of SX and Squire basses and buy one that feels good. Generally I've found the newer Squires nicer than SX, but with any instrument you need to judge each one individually. Two of the exact same model can be really different...

Go under your budget and get an SX (edit* or a squire, I havnt played either for a long time so no idea on quality these days) then buy a Leo Quan Badass II bridge for it. Cheaper than buying new pickups and easier to install, the difference is amazing.
Hahaha oh god, Hannes and I were talking about all that mad shit last night. Unfortunately that was actually my Aria Pro that got kick flipped, and kept working. The SX just looked like it had been. It did however survive an acid induced trip across Dans basement into Ben + drums then smashed into the ground by Ben.

Interesting idea, if I come across a Squire/SX. Thought about sticking an ad in the paper for "Squire bass guitar", probably get lots of calls from parents of little shits who gave up after a week.
Turns out that Ibanez I linked in the first post is an overpriced piece of crap GIO. But tried out another Ibanez today which was nice, good weight and nice neck. Also played a bunch of Status's and a Yamaha from 1971, know an older guy with a modest collection of nice gear.

Doesn't look like a bad deal. Also do not know anything about guitars.
Pretty sure the bass Kerry got for Sex Pest is an SX Jazz copy (http://filthcollective.files.wordpress.com/2011/12/img_1379.jpg?w=700&h=
). I have played it and it felt good.
I would say don't buy that Ibanez on trademe because it's fugly.

That Ibanez is a fucken good deal (Hamtown Dave's), $250 with a SKB case. Hell yeah. I'd get that.

And the same model brand new is only $100 more so he's bloody dreaming. Love when people think their shit is worth way more than it is.
If this http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=459438290 goes hilariously beyond my budget, I'll take your offer Dave. You still in Hamilton?

No problem man, I'm in no hurry to sell it just not using it. Yeah I'm in Hamilton.

Buy daves to get the case for cheap, sell ibanez to pimply metalcore kid (coz that's all that brand is worth in my opinion aside from the ATK and old roadster series) then buy sx + badass bridge. The active preamps in a lot of ibanez just go thwack tink and plonk. Don't be fooled by new ATKs, they are garbage. A good active preamp is fantastic if you like to change EQ settings per song, but cheap ones with cheap pickups can be a recipe for disaster. Passive is just much easier, you don't have to worry about replacing a 9V and repairs can be very simple. Also guitarists tend to turn every knob to full when they pick up an active bass, which basically doubles the volume of a bass that is already louder than a passive bass which can possibly wind up as damaged amp, cab or ears and it just sounds awful with all three bands boosted to fuck.
Oh yeah, do you play with a pic? If so go passive. Unless you want thwack tink and plonk.

Not anti-pick but I'm definitely a finger player. chur for the advice, team.
I thought pimply metalcore kids were a thing of the past?

Why don't you like them?
Aside from most looking wang, they sound too hyped up, hifi and characterless. Plus I generally don't like how they interact with overdrive pedals. I've owned and played a lot of basses and it's just my preference.
Re: giz a bass advice ay
With the ATK I have the treble all the way out, mids flat and a tiny boost in the lows. Sometimes I will boost the mids a touch and pull the lows out a bit if I'm playing a faster piece and need more clarity. Old strings too. I fucking hate new strings. Playing it with a pick just sounds lame.
Totally lusting after a japanese P bass at the moment though.

No way, wasn't keen to go any higher than $400 (would have been a steal). $620 sounds about right for that bass.
So yeah, keen! Send me a PM or something.

Fair enough, the thought of fucking around with batteries is pretty discouraging on it's own.
Re: giz a bass advice ay
Being that I switched from passive to active (used to hate active) it's not actually too much of a hassle in the real world. I never leave the 1/4" plugged into my bass if I'm not playing (which stops the battery running) and I know what my bass sounds like if the battery is starting to run low.
I never buy new batteries, get ones that have been used at work for radio mics and such and they generally last longer than when I chuck em in pedals.

Re: giz a bass advice ay
I'm pretty happy about having a passive bass now, changing the battery in my active always seemed to be more hassle than was necessary
