Cheap-ass amps that can be used for both guitars and basses?

Postby Obzen » Fri Jan 27, 2012 8:45 am

Guitar gear noob here. Amateur guitar player, never owned a guitar or an amp, but I've spent years playing and writing songs on other peoples guitars that happen to be sitting in my house or band practice space.

I want to start writing and recording my own dirty rock/metal music, at some point in the near future I want buy my own cheap as chips electric guitar and cheap as fux bass guitar. I'll also need an amp (something small) so that the instruments can transmit their precious noises.

If I'm gonna do something, I'm gonna do it cheap so I'd rather not fork out for 2 separate amps. About certain amps, I've heard people say things like "oh yeah, you can use it for bass or guitar". That's what I want, what they're talking about. But dirt cheap. How should I persue such an amp? What do I need to look out for?

Get a Holden Wasp vbl. They should go for around 500. Chuck some kt88's in them. Sounds great with everything.

Are you wanting to write, and practise as a band? cause you'll need something pretty loud in order to do that.

Are you wanting to record also? having something that's loud, recordable and cheap can be pretty difficult.

Personal bias aside, if you purely just want a system you can record with and jam via headphones, try out a pod. The latest update for the new HD500 includes an ampeg bass setup and a vocal preamp.

What? Are you fucking kidding? He's not playing a stadium or recording at York St. I've done recordings with tiny, piece of shit amps, and they sounded fine.

I won't be playing anything live with a band, just writing and recording, so it doesn't need to compete volume-wise with anything else.

I've got condenser mic's so it doesn't need to have a line-out.

Buy SX guitars if you wanna get both on the cheap. I'm not sure if there is a new company that rivals them, but hunt around and play a few and you should find some good ones. Great to modify/upgrade when you have the cash.

If you have some pedals to use, look at an old Roland Cube keyboard amp. Work great for bass and will do guitar a well. Spring reverb in them is pretty decent too.

Hey guys, Ross is a professional endorser with a personal brand and heaps of energy drinks. Better listen to what he says.

It was a legitimate question/answer FC. The guys looking for a solution that sounds good, is cheap, and easy to record. I provided one suggestion. I'm not doubting there are others.

FC your opinion of 'fine' will greatly differ from mine, and vice versa.

Obzen it might help if you say what kind of tone/sound you are going for.

Nat - great suggestions. The parent company for SX also do Agile, which are really, really well priced guitars and not too shabby.

Maybe it was, but the guy was clearly looking for something cheap that will just do the job, and it doesn't need to be heard by the entire neighbourhood in order to do that.

Exactly; my suggestion has usb input, headphone jack and isnt actually an amp at all, but a cheap recording interface. I was attempting to see if he wanted to use it in a band enviroment at some point (some people write as a band, some don't)

The Roland cube + pedals suggestion is a good all round solution for both playing and recording. That should be sweet.

i didn't read the bit about small. i've got a cheap fender frontman solid state that does all it needs to. doesn't sound super shit shit with bass. Its not amazing but it does what it has to.

Had a blast on a friends rolan cube last week on guitar, didn't know it was that versatile.. is there a specific keyboard cube? I'm not sure which type I was playing, but it looked like this:

Can you damage certain amps by playing a guitar/bass/vox/keyboard through it when it wasn't designed for that purpose? Or is it purely a sound thing?

xCaptainx wrote:Obzen it might help if you say what kind of tone/sound you are going for.

I'm at the stage of 'whatever works' at the moment, I'm not very experienced with amplification gear and the practical application of different sounds yet, so I wouldn't try and be picky what sound I'm going for. I'll just go with whatever 'sounds good for its price'. I'll be more picky in a year or so when I'm ready to replace the quick fix I'm about to buy. I couldn't even pin it down to a genre, I experiment with any and every genre I listen to, heaps.

Urgh not a new cube. Old one, silver covering is what you should look for.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyuss

"Guitarist Josh Homme soon gained a reputation for his unique downtuned, psychedelic style of guitar playing, and his convention of playing electric guitars through bass guitar amplifiers to create a bass-heavy sound."

That idea tickles my fancy too. Any chance of causing damage though?

Nat is referring to this

http://www.trademe.co.nz/music-instrume ... 285626.htm

I don't know too much about them, but that looks like a pretty good price.

Line 6 has been doing 'pods' for quite a while, it does amp/cab/mic/effects emulation, the newer ones have usb so you just plug into your computer and away you go.

http://www.trademe.co.nz/music-instrume ... 496416.htm

http://www.trademe.co.nz/music-instrume ... 095693.htm

and so on. They come in all shapes/sizes. The newer versions are called HD300, 400 and 500. The HD300 would be a good entry into that, they start at about $550. The pocket pod can be found for a $200 or so from the Rockshop. It would be good if you're after a 'jack of all trades' style digital setup and are more concerned with songwriting, than tone searching.

Either that or the roland would be good. The roland + pedal setup would appeal more if you wanted a traditional 'amp' setup and mic it up.

No running guitar through a bass amp would be no problem. The converge guitarist used to run an ampeg B something or rather as a slave for his marshall setup, or something to that effect. I've heard a similar setup before and it sounds huge.

I'm liking the idea of the pocket pod. just had a look at some info. Can you get decent recording quality from it?

haha I wouldnt endorse something I didnt like. I've had a pod, pod xt, HD147, vetta, spider II practise amp and an HD500 since I was a kid. I like Line 6 haha.

Obzen there are a lot of examples of what each pod can do on youtube. Plus there is a tone community on the line 6 page where you can download user created patches.

Again, if you're after something cheap and easy to record with, the pocket pod would be sweet. If you want an actual amp you can play on and take places, the roland + pedal option might be more suitable. (or any of the suggestions Nat just put up)

HAHAH that fraggle rock amp is awesome.
