Not at all Phil.

I have been working in theatre for close to 10 years now. I get flown around aussie doing this shit.

A guitarist who is having problems with feedback, is not going to be helped by pumping it through a monitor in front of him. Now he is surrounded by speakers waiting to cause a loop with his guitar.
I would put the guitar amp at the side of the stage. Your amp is your monitor, Sort the problem out at the source instead of adding to the problem.

Shut up Nat, Phill stood in front of a sound desk while the Rabble and the Offbeats played once.
I think he knows a bit more than you m9.
Some good advice in this thread.

I always had a footswitch to go to a clean channel (ie, one with the gain wound right down) on my amp and jumped on that between songs.

Maybe you could hire Phill to be your sound engineer, he once mixed the Rabble and the Offbeats so could probably give you some good feedback on your guitar (model, specs, set up etc.).

Sheesh whatever man. My advice wasnt regarding the feedback because the question had already been answered well by Grant and Shane. Knowing how to talk to a soundy is one of the most important parts of playing live. And id say that to any musician starting out playing live. But what would I know, 17 years of gigging probaboly doesnt count for much.

sorry ...eddie, but what is this? you accused me of big upping myself over nats experience, 'poo pooing' what he said, despite not being any bloody use yourself.
i was surprised nat took any notice, but your digs were just a weak man joining in an easy target, as usual.
your falling back on your status as a very unnoticeble musician is pretty pointless seeing as i was just responding to you having a go at me.

I should have just shipped with the one standard EQ setting that couldn't be adjusted: mids all the way down, treb and bass all the way up. Chuck that between your sammick strat and peavy rage 158 for some sik tone.

but a short answer for high gain pickups/distortion would be:

noise supressor. Something like a Boss NS-2 or ISP Decimator. Just in front of the amp/in your pedal signal would be fine (it should be the last pedal in your chain, the one just before going to your amp)

Turning down - if you're mic'd up at a gig, you only need a stage sound. Plus you'll be suprised how much better band practise goes if everyone just turns down a tiny bit.

Knowing your stage. The whole 'foot on the foldback' thing is great n all, but you're pointing high gain pickups directly to a speaker. Feedback will occur.

lower your gain. Your tone comes from your amp/settings, not the gain. All you're doing is adding extra gain, and possibly more chance of feedback, with gain. Try winding it down 20% or so, you'll probably notice that your 'tone' hasnt changed and your guitar is easier to control at loud volumes.

The great thing with gate pedals is having the ability to control the level of gating you will be doing. Also, you can turn it on and off if you require feedback in certain areas, I do it all the time.

As you are new to gigging, a noise gate will be the best easiest approach. With time, you will learn how to use it and how to control your equipment at loud/stage volumes and either lower the gate you have set, or remove it altogether. There's no point in me throwing all sorts of info regarding amp settings if it's going to go over your head.

im not giving 'advise', i just advised they use the same soundguy for a while at the same venue(if possible) since they are still learning all the tricks of the trade, in my experience most new bands do this anyway, and the ones who try and take a big leap struggle a lot more, its the sort of advice that wouldnt apply to career musicians like yourself, even when you were starting out, but it sounds as if the whole band is fairly new to gigging.
sorry for treading on your guise hallowed ground here, i wasnt attempting to address the specific problem of feedback, that had already been done satisfactorily before i said anything, with 3 odd years of music school behind you i would have expected you to pick that up, i wasnt trying to teach him anything, i was just opining a good way to learn.
my comment to nat was along the lines of a joke, since it would be a good description of anyone who behaved in the way he described, the comment was quite prophetic as it turned out tho, regarding eddies comments and now your presence ross.

Urr, just to disagree with you Phil, Using the same sound man is not gonna help that much if you are new to gigging and asking for help coz your guitar feeds back. No diss to the author. Being comfortable as a live band would make more sense.

Ps Most sound guys hate your band. Whoever you are.

just what ive observed others doing, to everyone who replied bar nat, the sad pretense that this was about what i said rather than my right to say it, is.. well its completely transparent.

Also know your guitar.
I have two bass guitars and to get a similar sound out of either takes two different set ups just have to fuck about with the amp a bit and while one requires two peddels to get the same sound the other needs only one, but the peddel needs to be at totally different settings.
