Bass cab advice

Postby PertHJ » Wed May 12, 2010 9:37 am

Yo, so I'm thinking about buying a bass cab.

Would be using with my fender bassman 400 head

Have jack all money so something under $300 would be best, any suggestions?

Depends man. If you can afford to be patient and wait a while, you'll more than likely see a good deal come up on trademe.

So I'm actually going to buy a bass cab now, should have up to $800 to play with...maybe more if I wait until October

Will be using a Fender bassman 400 amp, says on the back min 4ohms 350w.

Playing Ibanez roadstar. Punk rock obviously.

Know next to nothing about bass gear, so any advice?

4X10 would be best to go for? what about ohms? Whats the difference between 4 and 8 ohms?

thanks in advance :)

Just get yourself one of those sturdy SWR goliath 4x10s. Should be able to pick one up second hand for what you've got.

+1 on SWR. Will last for ages and really punchy. I owned a workingmans 4x10 (cheaper version) and it hauled serious ass.

The difference is amp handling Pert. It will really just be louder with a 4ohm cab. The 8ohm will half the amps output, which isn't to say it will be half as loud.

I used one of those cheaper Ashdown cabs at a show last week. You couldn't turn the horn off (or down) which in my option makes it worthless for using with any overdrive unless you like a bit of fizz.

You can turn them off Timi. It just involves a screw driver and wire snips.
Just tell the owner you made a great mod to their cab.

Of course but I can understand that most people wouldn't want to do that, despite "improving" the sound.

My way around this fizzy problem would be rolling the tone off and/or cut the EQ so no frequencies make it to the tweeter. Or was it just too bright?

Luckily I was using my VT Bass/micro GK setup, VT is a speaker sim so there wasn't too much fizz. Duct tape over the horn would have been my "fix" if I had been using my Orange.

Man I hate horns.

Aside from trademe, any where else good for looking at second hand cabs? Kinda want to get something now, rather than waiting for something good to pop up second hand.

BEHRINGER ULTRABASS BB410 HIGH-PERFORMANCE 1,200-WATT BASS CABINET WITH ORIGINAL 4 X 10'' BUGERA SPEAKERS AND 1'' HORN - $599
-Few reviews I've read suggest this will fall apart quickly, any one had any experience?

or

WARWICK WCA411PRO (4OHM) 4X10+H 600W BASS SPEAKER CAB $899*
- Can probably get staff discount so would be a bit less than this

http://www.rockshop.co.nz/04/start.php

Or is it dumb to buy something new and cheap?

I'm looking to fix up and sell my now blown up 2x15 cab if you're interested?

Due to the cost of the speakers, I'd probs be looking for $700.

I'd be keeping it if I hadn't already replaced it with a Livesound 8x10.

Cam the Brag.

There's always these, which aren't so bad, especially for the price. Plus it's in Auckland, which is good for you.

Muice has one, he might be able to tell you more about it.

All 3 currently on my watch list

Are those Ampeg's good? Reviews I read either raved or said they were kinda unreliable, needing repairs soon after purchasing new.

I'd recommend checking out the 2x10 Aguilar cabs but they're expensive.

This Ampeg 2x10 is cheaper than buying 2 of the 4x10 http://www.rockshop.co.nz/shop/bass/amplifiers/amp-cabinets/ampeg-microstack-2x10-speaker-cabinet.html

For those on the edge of your seat, I ended up buying a cab off trademe.
