The golden rule is, when you go to buy, take someone with you who plays.

Don't get too fixated on certain brands if you aren't getting something really high end. Just play as many guitars as you can in your budget until you find something you like.

I would say avoid Ovation and only get pickups if you plan on playing acoustic in a band.

I'd back what timi said. My acoustic has pickups, never used them... May as well use that extra $100-200 to upgrade to a better guitar. Get a matt finish I reckon, looks and sounds better, and it ages well.

Oh, and ask about deals with a case.

I got this guitar for $600, and the case was free.

It's probably not the best sounding guitar, but I knew I was getting a deal because $600 was less than half the rrp of the guitar and case... and I'm partially deaf so I don't really care.

Ibanez are always sweet
I got an Ibanez steel string acoustic about four years ago, and it's still one of my favourite guitars 8)

Yo theres heaps of dudes in auckland metal bands with full endorsements, you should let one of them fire one in your guts for a free guitar. They give that shit away anyway.

Just my opinion, get one with a cutaway. Also, depends on the person I guess, I'd get something with a medium sized body. I used to own a nice Takamine but got rid of it because it was just a bit too big to be comfortable. It was a dreadnought I think?

It also had a built in tuner which was pretty fuckin cool. Didn't like my bomb string attempts however.

I got a Dean- paid about 600 for it from Rockshop, from memory. It's nice, really easy to play and a good sound.. Would recommend. But I agree, take someone with you know who plays- and knows their shit.
