what's a bass amp

Postby kettles » Tue Nov 17, 2009 5:46 pm

Hey punkas

I'm on the lookout for an amp for our bassist. We're a punk-ish band with one guitarist. So we are not super loud but it would be good to have a bit of headroom in the event that it is unmic'd/unDI'd at a gig. What's the lowest wattage we'd want to go for?

Is there a rough guideline for matching guitar amp volume to bass amp volume?

thanks punkas

Should probably give a price range, what sort of gear your guitarists are using, what sort of bass etc.

haha, i edited it and added actual question, "What's the lowest wattage I'd want to look out for?"

Price - whatever, we're poor.
guitarist - Squier Strat into a 100w Fender solid state
bass - Epiphone thing with one pickup
one vocals with a few backups

if you have little cash, you'll have to start with a combo. look for a something like a samick 30w amp. you'll be able to hear it over a drumkit.

i'd recommend you get a jansen bassman head and a suitable cabinet. you'll be able to run you vocals through the head as well as the bass. head will set you back at least $400 when you can find one on trademe.

You should pretty much triple the wattage of any guitar amp. 100 watts for a solid state amp is about lowest for competing with drums, and still being punchy. 300 watts is great for medium size gigs. A combo amp with speaker would be easiest to start with. Trademe gives the best deals these days, I got a good practice combo for $60 this year.

Hope that helps
