NZ domains

Postby Lurch » Fri Aug 30, 2013 10:38 pm

Bit of a novice here. Keen to grab an addy primary so I can rock a sweet firstname@lastname.org.nz email. What do I need to know? What are my costs? There seem to be about a billion companies to go with - what is the best?

Also there is talk of simple .nz addresses. Struggling to find any info on that too - since the .co.nz is already taken I'm not really feeling the .net/.org/.geek/.kiwi or other options as much.

Anything with .nz seems a bit expensive compared to what you can get .com, .org etc. for from US companies, especially if you register for 5 or 10 years at a time.

A domain by itself doesn't give you an email address or anything. It has to point somewhere. If you're only going to use the domain for emails, you'd probably want to look for a company that includes email forwarding, eg. Namecheap.

If I grab a .nz I can't then host it through a yank site for less coin? I'd prob want to stick with a local address simply because the name I want is available. My surname is pretty common and especially with a city named after me I'm just not going to get a plain .com etc.

Jay: what does that price for domainz include? That seems fairly reasonable, especially if I can get my brother or sister onboard to share costs.

Well, you could spend a bit more on a yank site on top of the .nz, and get a website as well. The website would handle the email, so you don't need the domain's email forwarding feature.

Check how cheap the .nz is if you get it from a US website like godaddy too.

whats wrong with .co.nz? i looked at one for a potential business recently and it was like $15 the .com was about $5 but it was two pretty obscure words.

austin.co.nz already exists, otherwise I would have snapped it up years ago.

You have to weigh up the cost and hassle of re-registering your domain name every 5 years or so just to keep an e-mail address active.

10 years feels like a lifetime though. Make sure if people visit the domain from your email, they get nothing but creepy family photos. :baton:

The plan is a solitary photo of me looking like a fucking champ, pulling the fingers, with Gwar's "Sick of you" playing on repeat in the background.

whot's the story here?
why pay 8 times more for a clumsy .co.nz than a simple .com?
simple flag waving patriotism or is there some legislative requirement. tax issues?

Plus there is quite a large city in Texas which already has a monopoly on the address I want.

Jumped on at my break at 3pm and already gone. I suspect the .co.nz must have snagged it: don't understand why that wouldn't have been specified when I was monitoring it. Nevermind.

Just change your last name to Waxahachie and be done with it.
