Steam powered shit

Postby buckton » Thu May 10, 2012 12:38 am

Bought Fallout New Vegas last year for PC never finished it, decided on Sunday night I was gonna have a hoon on it. It was the first time I'd used steam on a clean install, so I got sent a verification to an email I don't have access to anymore. I contacted customer support on Sunday night and have only got a reply today.

So to summarize, I bought a game and can't play it. Should have just pirated it.

I didn't say that it was a boxed retail one and that it doesn't mention anywhere that it's steam powered. I could understand if I'd bought it from steam. Its like buying a cd then needing to verify that you own it through iTunes before you can play it.

yeah fair enough. I dislike steamworks on retail games, I wasted $85 on skyrim that I can't sell off because my key will be forever tied to my account

i don't mind steam so much now but it was pretty shit-house when halflife 2 came out.

also, it does suck that all games won't just automatically start offline if you want. it's one feature of Impulse I really liked - not sure if it still has it, haven't touched it since Gamespot took over the show.

that said, steam is an online service for the most part so it kind of goes hand and hand that most of the time it needs to be online - and if you have purchased through retail the boxes should say something about needing an internet connection so its on you not on steam.

ideally, steam would be just like gog where you can just download and install where ever.

I wasn't complaining about the reliability or whatever, just that I couldn't access my account because the email I was registered with didn't exist anymore and that I had to wait a week for them to change the email on my account so I could play a retail packaged game :baton: other than that I don't have a problem.

It's one of those things that is probably fine if you use it regularly, but when you're a casual gamer and only buy the odd game that you play every now and then it can get a bit tedious with updates etc. I'm used to just being able to load up a game and playing it without jumping through many hurdles. I find steam puts up annoying hurdles which really frustrates me, but as I say, I hardly use it so that's probably why I always seem to have some sort of difficulty when I want to play a game through it.

I meet heaps of people who hate it. Generally that means they're too thick to switch to offline mode before they disconnect from internet.
I like it, mainly for older/cheaper/smaller games that I can download a stack of before I go away on holiday/work.
Also sweet when you wake up on your birthday and your mates have bought you games off your wishlist for you to download.

also sweet when games that have no/other DRM can be added to the UI so you can play basically any game off it

Conversely, why the fuck do some steam games have external DRM as well? My only rage at steam is that I installed Arkham Asylum, switched steam to offline mode, then it wouldnt let me play because I wasn't signed into Games For Windows Live. -.- Steam is pretty solid DRM by itself, this new 'constant connection' shit games like D3 have is just overkill
